Power Point used today

Mathematical Mindsets by Jo Boaler

Today’s topic is in Chapters 6

Equitable Strategies (p. 102-109)

  1. Offer all students high-level content.
  2. Work to change ideas about who can achieve in mathematics.
  3. Encourage students to think deeply about mathematics.
  4. Teach students to work together.
  5. Give girls and students of color additional encouragement to learn math and science.
  6. Eliminate (or at least change the nature of) homework.

Directions for the Barnga card game

Barnga places participants in a situation where they experience the shock of realizing that despite many similarities, people of differing cultures perceive things differently or play by different rules. Players learn that they must understand and reconcile these differences if they want to function effectively in a cross-cultural group.

Notes from participants:

Implications for Math classrooms--hidden aspects of culture

  • Discourse is essential
  • Winners elevated--Getting right answers but not for right reasons...
  • If taught to depend on rules and rules change...
  • Strategies could change depending on the students
  • Group work--looks like all are playing, but some have no idea what’s happening; everyone wants to win; no one cares about the loser
  • Survival: make up rules to be a winner or just give up and let others play
  • Suspicious of others--not betrayed by others, but betrayed by the system
  • Lots of frustration and anger, followed by passivity

Summer 2017 Jo Boaler online teacher professional development course called Mathematical Mindsets. You can register here for enrollment notification.

Mathematical Mindsets is a professional program to train teachers to teach mathematics for a growth mindset to students of any age (K-16). This course is completely different from How to Learn Mathematics (HTLM). HTLM provides the background and basic information for teachers to understand the need for mindset mathematics teaching, Mathematical Mindsets shows teachers how to teach in these ways. it is recommended that teachers first take How to Learn Mathematics and then Mathematical Mindsets.

  • The aim of the Mathematical Mindsets course is to inspire teachers and to give them practical tools they can use in their classroom tomorrow. The course will take approximately 30 hours to complete.
  • It shares the latest brain science on the ways students learn mathematics and translates the science into teaching methods and approaches.
  • It shares approximately 30 classroom videos to help teachers learn how to teach Mindset Mathematics.
  • Participants will see Jo Boaler teaching 6th and 7th graders mathematics, and see the ways they transformed their engagement and achievement. The students, who were with us for 18 maths lessons, improved their test achievement by an average of 50% per student, which is equivalent to 1.6 years of school!
  • Teachers will be invited into an online community with the other participants and together participants will discuss the videos and the tasks used.
  • The pedagogy of the course is one of active engagement.
  • Participants will hear from thought leaders such as mindset guru Carol Dweck and inspiring mathematician Steve Strogatz, in interviews recorded for this course.

Topics Include:

  • The messages and praise we give students
  • Teaching visual mathematics
  • Approaches to designing and choosing good tasks
  • Techniques to encourage productive class and group discussions
  • Ways to encourage a mistakes-friendly environment
  • Methods of inspiring mathematical problem solving and investigation.

MN Mathematics Benchmark Toolkit

A new Mathematics Benchmark Toolkit has been designed to help educators focus efforts for improved mathematics achievement. This toolkit provides state-level data about the difficulty levels of the mathematics benchmarks and a suggested process for using this state data along with school and district benchmark reports to help educators identify concerns and areas for improvement. Link sot the documents in the Toolkit are provided below.
