Your computer and our internet equipment are easily damaged by lightning and other power surges during storms. Power surges can also occur when electricity comes back on after a power outage. Please follow these steps to keep your computer and our equipment from being damaged and costing you expensive repairs:
All computer and internet equipment must be plugged into a surge protector or UPS to protect them from lightning or surge damage through the power outlet.
When you first hear thunder, turn off your computer and unplug the Ethernet cable from the port labeled POE from the AC adapter. Properly unplugged, lightning should not cause any damage to either your computer or our internet equipment. If you lose power, unplug the cable so that the equipment is not damaged by a surge when the power is restored. If you are going to be away, please unplug the Ethernet cable and leave your computer turned off.
Here is a picture to assist you with unplugging your equipment:
If you are having trouble with your internet and getting the error message “this webpage cannot be displayed,” unplug the Ethernet cable from the internet port in your router, (the other end of this cable should be plugged into the AC adapter port labeled LAN), unplug/turn off your router and plug directly into the Ethernet port on your laptop or desktop computer. This is called “bypassing the router.” Here is a picture depicting the internet port on a router and Ethernet ports on a laptop and desktop:
Once you have plugged your Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on your computer, you will need to try and go to a webpage. You may want to try google.com, ccaonline.com, or weather.com and see if the webpage loads up for you. If you are able to get the webpage to come up and you are no longer getting “this webpage cannot be displayed” then you have internet and there may actually be an underlying issue internally. Remember, you are always welcome to call with any questions or concerns.
Should you still be unable to get to the internet after plugging directly into your computer, or “bypassing the router” you should go ahead and give us a call so that we are able to check things on our end to make sure everything is working as it should.
If you have any questions about your bill, call 217-735-2677. Our business hours are 9:00 to 5:00 Monday through Thursday, 9:00 to 6:30 Friday, and 10:00 to 12:30 Saturday.
