HEB announces Lubbock location

SAN ANTONIO, Texas—Grocery retailer HEB announced plans to build a store in Lubbock, Texas today. Earlier this month, HEB representatives purchased land at the corner of 19th Street and Upland Avenue, on the western end of Lubbock’s city limits. The location will be an upgraded grocery store, known as HEB Plus!, and in addition to groceries will offer items such as clothing, furniture, and electronics. It will also include a pharmacy and a gas station. Construction will begin in October with hopes to open during the summer of 2018.

HEB currently operates stores as far west as Odessa and as far north as Abilene. “We are looking forward to serving the Lubbock area,” said CEO Charles Butt. “If this location is successful, we could see an expansion into west Texas and the Panhandle in the future.”

“I’m glad another grocery store is coming to Lubbock,” said resident Naomi Carroll. “It’s only been United [Supermarkets] and Walmart for a long time, and the lack of competition has been driving up prices.”

HEB is Texas’s largest private company. It currently operates more than 350 stores across the state.
