Below are a bunch of questions you could ask on a college tour. They are broken into categories based on what is important to look for in a college. Of course, you do not have to ask them all.
Academics
You want a college that will push you academically.
- How much time do students usually spend studying or doing homework each week?
- On average, do students find courses challenging?
- How much reading and writing is expected?
- How often are students asked to make presentations?
- Do students have to use numbers or statistics throughout their coursework?
Collaboration
You want a college where you will get to work and share ideas with others.
- How often do students work together on class projects and assignments?
- Do students usually work together in order to better understand the material?
- How often do students prepare for exams together?
- How often do students from different backgrounds interact?
Faculty
You want a college with professors who are supportive, available, and effective.
- Are faculty members available to support you when you need help?
- Do faculty members do a good job explaining course goals and requirements?
- Do faculty members give detailed feedback on assignments?
- Do faculty members provide support to students with their future plans?
- Do faculty members ever work on projects with students?
- Do you ever interact with faculty outside of class?
- Are most classes taught by professors or graduate students?
School Support
You want a college that provides the resources and services students need to succeed.
- Do students use learning support services, like writing coaching and tutoring?
- Does the school provide physical and mental health services?
- Are students satisfied with the academic advising services?
- Are students satisfied with the career support services?
- Do students get along with each other? Is the campus a friendly environment?
- What’s the relationship like between students and school staff?
- Is the campus safe?
Campus Life
You want a college where life outside of class is vibrant.
- What do most students do for fun during the week and on the weekends?
- Is there a lot of drinking and/or drug use on campus?
- Are most students involved in an activity outside of class?
- Are there plenty of school-sponsored events on campus?
- Is Greek Life a big thing on campus?
General Questions
You want a college that feels right.
- Are you happy you decided to come here?
- Have you experienced any pleasant or unpleasant surprises in your time here?
- What do you wish were different about this place?
- What advice would you give yourself if you were in my shoes?
