ONGOING

These organizations offer volunteer opportunities to Thomson students on an ongoing basis throughout the school year.  They provide opportunities that are ongoing and may require a commitment from their volunteers.

Bendale Acres

A long-term care home located just down the street from Thomson, Bendale Acres has provided Thomson students with opportunities to earn their community involvement hours working with residents.

Canadian Cancer Society

The Canadian Cancer Society has a number of opportunities related to activities such as the Relay for Life, Daffodil Days, Health Promotion and Advocacy Campaigns and frequently relies on student volunteers to aid in their fundraising and advocacy efforts.  If you are interested, check out their website for the application form: CCS Youth Volunteer Opportunities.  

Scarborough Historical Museum

Like David and Mary Thomson C.I., the Scarborough Historical Museum is situated on land originally settled by David and Mary Thomson in 1798.  The Museum takes on a number of student volunteers each years to help with programs and events.

The Hub

The Hub is located on Kennedy Road just north of Ellesmere Road. There are numerous activities and opportunities available there on an ongoing basis, with different activities taking place each day of the week.  Some of the opportunities offered through the Hub will

be featured in the “time-limited” portion of this document as well, but since there’s always something going on at the Hub, it is a good place to inquire at any time of the year.

Don Montgomery Community Centre

The DMCC offers opportunities for students to get involved in Parks and Recreation activities in the community.  There are also a number of other services offered through the Centre that could be of interest to Thomson students and give the opportunity for community involvement hours to be earned.

Markham African Caribbean Canadian Association

MACCA offers Saturday School homework help and educational tutoring for students grades 1-8. They are regularly seeking volunteers to act as Student Mentors and Teacher’s Assistants.

TIME-LIMITED

These opportunities are provided at specific times of the year, or call for volunteers for specific dates.  They often do not require a long-term commitment.  Opportunities will be added as they become available, and removed once they are no longer relevant.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is looking for youth volunteers to assist with fundraising efforts in their Restore (located on Kennedy Rd.) It is an excellent opportunity to gain some retail experience while contributing to a worthy cause.

Salvation Army Bell Ringer

The Salvation Army is recruiting bell ringers for their annual Christmas Kettle Campaign. This fundraiser helps support community programs run by the Salvation Army in Scarborough.
