Taking care of our garden
Date | Class | Observations |
Week 1 | All | We discovered frost had damaged our plants over the holidays! We covered up the potato plants to protect them from the frost. |
Week 1 | All | We were very sad to discover that the slugs and snails had eaten many of our plants. Mrs Miekle has found that we can put crushed eggshells on our gardens. The snails and slugs don’t like them. |
Week 1 | Non-bible students | We worked with Mrs Hughes today to try and fill 2 more tyres with compost ready to plant some potato plants. It was hard work and we could not complete the job. |
28/7/14 | Room 10 | We went out to visit the garden today and water it! It’s looking good! We are excited to decorate it and make some signs. |
Week 4 | Room 8 | We have enough milk bottles and egg shells. We don’t need anymore. Our plants look a little healthier and bigger this week. We saw there were green leaves on almost all the plants. We wonder when we will see the vegetables growing! We are going to our garden to see if we need to do some weeding. |
Week 4 | Room 10 | We finished painting and putting the fruit and vegetables around the garden beds. Mr Fletcher helped us do it! It looks great! We are proud of our tomatoes and onions |
Week 5 | Room 9 | We covered up the potato tyre garden with more soil and another tyre. We watered some plants. We planted a marigold plant Mrs Jessop gave us to attract bees to our garden and keep away bad insects. This is called companion planting. We also carefully helped the beans to grow up the trellis. |
Week 6 | Room 10/8 | On Tuesday afternoon we all went out and got the water catchers from around the drinking fountain and watered our garden. There were lots of plants that looked really dry so we gave extra water to them! We loved the addition of our signs so people can see what we are planting and growing. We still need to add some for spinach, cabbage and for the herbs, parsley and spring onion. We also picked out a few weeds and made sure that the bottles were covering the plants that were struggling! |
Week 7 | Room 10 | We visited the garden and picked out some weeds! We were very happy to see how big the plants were getting. We found some weeds and pulled them out and made sure the garden had plenty of water. |
Week 7 | Year 2’s | Mrs Meikle showed some children how to mix worm tea with water to fertilise the garden and now they can show others how to do it. The worm tea will help the vegetables grow bigger and faster. |
