JavaScript Coding / Web Development / HTML with JavaScript

Please note:

  1. All Software must be set up and installed the day before class.
  2. At this time, JavaScript-based courses cannot be run on Chrome Books or iPads.

This course uses the p5 Web Editor and VS Code, software that runs code in different programming languages with an IDE Interpreter. Please follow the guides below to create a Google account and a p5 Web Editor account and install VS Code (for offline use).

Google Installation Instructions:

You’ll need a non-school or work account for this course. To create a Google account:

  1. Navigate to Google here.
  2. Select Create account > For my personal use to get started.

  1. Enter your first and last name and click Next.

  1. Next, enter your birthday and gender and click Next.

Note: For more information, click “Why we ask for birthday and gender.”

  1. Select the “Create your own Gmail address” option, enter a customized email address, and click Next.
    Note: It's highly recommended that you create a customized address. This way, you can create a more secure account.

  1. Create a password for your account with 8-10 characters.

  1. You may be asked to provide a phone number for verification purposes. If so, enter your mobile number.

  1. Optional: You may add a recovery email or skip the step.

  1. Review your account information and click Next.
  2. Agree to the terms and services.

  1. Click Confirm for the personalized experience.

p5 Web Editor Installation Instructions:

Students will need an account on the p5.js website to create and save their code. Accounts are free to make.

1. On your student’s computer, go to https://editor.p5js.org/signup

2. Create a username and password using an email address that you have access to and click Sign up.

3. Write down the login information and provide it to your students so they can log into this account on the first day and throughout the sessions.

VS Code Installation Instructions:

Students can install VS Code for working offline (if they’re on a Windows/Mac/Linux):

1. Download VS Code using this link.

2. Install the software in the default location, with both boxes checked on the first page of the installer.


Zoom

You’ll use Zoom to join your class each session. Your student will need to set up Zoom to enable Screen Sharing beforehand so they can share their screen with their instructor.

To download and install Zoom:

  1. Navigate to this website and click Download under Zoom Desktop Client.
  2. Follow the installation instructions and open Zoom.
  3. If you’re on a Mac, follow these instructions to set up your computer to enable screen sharing with Zoom.

On the first day of class, the instructor will spend time helping students activate and become familiar with the software.
