The current edition of the Trimaris scribe’s guide has been expanded to show all the award badges that have been passed to date (Fall 2017), plus wording from local groups that can be a guideline and source of ideas for those creating scrolls for local use. None of these wordings are absolutely mandatory. They can be edited if you don’t have enough space, added to if you have too much space, or personalized for a specific recipient if you are doing a commission or replacement piece.

Note that all the wordings refer to the Crown as “We the Crown Trimaris”. This makes it easier to make the scrolls work for any reign, no matter what gender has won the Crown, or what title the current Crowns prefer to use.

This Kingdom further supports its scribe by providing basic materials on request- paper, paint (gouache), ink or cartridges to our scribes without any out-of pocket costs. We love our Scribes. To request such items, please contact the Trimaris College of Scribes.

Kingdom Standards and Reminders

Materials Standards

This is a brief reminder concerning what materials are expected to be used when creating scrolls for the Kingdom. The current preference for the sake of uniformity is watercolor gouache paints, Bristol vellum board paper, non-smearing / non-fading ink (dip or cartridge pens as preferred). The watercolor gouache paints are reconstitutible with water and tend not to become brittle (like acrylics) if the page is bent. Bristol board paper is sturdy, acid free and acceptable to both calligraphers and illuminators for its easy-to-work surface. Some brands in common use include:

Gouache paint- Reeves, Talon, Pebeo, Winsor-Newton
Bristol Vellum- Pearl Store brand Bristol, Winsor-Newton, Strathmore Pergamenata heavy weight paper (in lieu of Bristol)
Pens (cartridge)- Schaffer, Rotring, Brause
Ink (for dip pens)- Winsor Newton, Speedball acrylic, Calli (Pearl brand), Dr. Ph Martin, Ziller

The most important areas for uniformity are covered above. There are various reasons for this request, including the difficulty some calligraphers have working on toothy watercolor paper, the colorfastness of inks, and the brittle cracking of acrylic paints. Please make sure your materials meet at least these standards for all Kingdom level scrolls.

Obtaining Materials

We know that materials for scrolls can be expensive, and that you are all amazing to offer up your art and skill for the good of the Kingdom. The kingdom does have a Quartermaster who works hard to keep our scribes supplied with our minimum standard materials if the scribe cannot purchase their own. Reeves paint, Pearl Bristol, and ink can be obtained though her at no cost to the scribes. The materials provided are expected to be used only for making Kingdom level scrolls, and can only be replaced if the scribe has turned in enough work to merit more materials. A person who turns in 3 or 4 scrolls a year probably won't need more than one pad of Bristol, and one pack of paints to last for about 3 years at that rate. Please don't request more supplies than you need, and if ever you have extra that you will not use feel free to turn in back in for someone else to use. Paper Sizes

Beyond the normal 9x12 sized Bristol, feel free when making 'larger' awards to use large sized paper like 11x14. I have also seen some really neat small pieces, 4x6 or 5x7, which have been created in sizes appropriate to medieval books. These small pages can even be framed inexpensively (dollar store frames are handy) and can look very impressive.

Royal Titles

Please refrain from placing royal titles such as King/Queen Rex/Regina etc. at the bottom of your page. Many of our Crowns in Trimaris have very specific titles they wish to use for the duration of a single reign.

Leaving Space

Make sure to leave a full line of space for names to be written on scrolls. Although there are some short names out there, we also have the Welsh and Spanish personas who get awards! Also make sure to leave enough space in the 'month' blank to accommodate everything from May to September.

“Nothing is Perfect” Rule

Remember that no works of the hand will ever be absolutely perfect, and there is always room for improvement. Just because you are new to scribal work, or are trying a new style does not mean your work isn't good enough to turn in. And if you are really, really against turning a piece in, find a dean or longtime scribe to work with you and provide commentary.

Back-Side Notes

Backs of scrolls are great places to provide information. Illuminators are encouraged to list their art as original, or where they found their source of inspiration like “Pretzel and Cookie border from the hours of Catherine of Cleaves” (yes, someone actually did that one). Calligraphers are also encouraged to list the hand they used, or if not a hand per se, which book inspired the calligraphy. Always remember to sign your work clearly- or our poor Heralds have a rough time trying to figure your name out. Make sure to clearly print your name and write dark enough to read in poor light. Remember to sign your work!

Illumination Standards of Coverage and Complexity Guidelines

As a minimum, we encourage the following complexity or coverage of illumination:

Honors/unofficial awards: Very simple. Perhaps a smallish illuminated capital letter or some very simple vine work. A solid colored border with very simple white work etc.
Non armigerous: Illuminated or historiated capital, or 'one side' illumination, where one of the 4 sides of the page is illuminated (say bar and vine or whatever)
Armigerous: Illuminated or Historiated capital (slightly more complex) and/or more complex 'one side' illumination or 'two side' illumination
Grant level/Augmentation/Trefoil: Three or four side illumination showing Complexity, possibly with an illuminated capital, maybe some gold leaf work. Fairly complex with a solid calligraphy hand.
Patent: As close to a masterwork as one can get.

Remember, none of these are hard and fast rules, only basic guidelines which can help give people a feel for what needs to be done on a piece. If someone turns in a fantastic historiated initial, even if there is no other illumination, it may be used for a Grant level award. It really is more about the complexity of the piece than the space covered by the illumination.

Calligraphy

It is best for the type of script to match the style of illumination as closely as possible to best display the style of a period. Level of complexity for calligraphy should also try to match the complexity of the illumination.

Basic Guidelines for All Scrolls

All Scrolls

Create at least a 1” margin all around (½” on very small scrolls) so the recipient can frame the piece.
Do not try to fill the entire page- make sure there’s room for the other elements.
Never toss a scroll- even the worst mistakes can often be corrected.
SIGN the scroll in pencil on the back. Use stick-on labels if your handwriting isn’t clear.
Match the time period & style of the art and calligraphy.
Never be afraid to ask questions.

Calligraphers

Some scripts, mainly taken from Drogin or Harris, are included in this file. There is an example list, and the pages on which they are found, in the Appendices section.
For scrolls with no illumination yet, block in all the margins (min 1”) plus a space for the illumination FIRST
If you think there should be a major opening letter (historated or inhabited capital) block it in and pencil in the correct letter. Make sure not to start writing your text with the same letter.
Make a note of the script you have used on the back, and the approximate date.
If the script is difficult to read, attach a printed or typed copy of the text to the back.
Leave a full line blank for the recipient’s name.
For dates, finish scrolls with “___ day of ________ AS __ ” and make sure there is enough space to complete the date, plus have room for signatures.
DO NOT add “King”, “Queen”, “Rex” , etc. to scrolls. DO add a penciled signature line.
Do not add the names of the reigning Crown to the text unless you are doing a commission or replacement piece.
On all Kingdom-given awards, make sure that there is a line or space for the King and Queen to sign, except where noted below text. Baronial scrolls should also have space/ lines for Baronial signatures.
Some of the armigerous-level awards do NOT necessarily carry the Arms award for that level. Do not include wording for such unless instructed to do so, as the recipient may already have an AOA. Please do try to leave a line or so of room at the end as this may need to be added prior to court.
Nearly all wordings end with some form of “the ____ day of _______ AS __”. Make sure there is enough line space after “of” to accommodate any length of month (May and September do require very different amounts of space) plus the year “Anno Societatis” (or AS). If the date is in the middle of the text, allow room to complete the date, even if you leave an entire blank line.

Illuminators

Leave adequate space to word the scrolls. Do not add lines for calligraphy.
Include a note on the back of the source/inspiration for the illumination, along with the time period or date, so the calligrapher can use the appropriate script.
You may add depictions of the award token, especially if the calligraphy was done first.
Do create linedrawings to turn in, as some people like only to paint, or prefer to do calligraphy on unpainted pages.
There are NO award wordings starting with “X”!!!
Do not make single-letter or small simple borders on larger pieces (such as 11 x 14). Make sure the decoration is in suitable scale for the page size.

Rankings and Awards of Trimaris

Titled Nobility

Duke/Duchess is a permanent rank indicating a Lord or Lady has reigned twice or more times as King or Queen. Dukes and Duchesses may wear coronets of precious metal or other material, embellished with strawberry leaves or fleur de lei, ornamented as they see fit, the overall height not to exceed four (4) inches, and are addressed as “Your Grace”.

Count /Countess are also permanent titles and the title is bestowed upon a Lord or Lady who has reigned once. Counts and Countesses (and those with alternate titles of the same rank) may wear embattled coronets of precious metal or other material, ornamented as they see fit, the overall height not to exceed three (3) inches. They are addressed as “Your Excellency”.

Viscount/Viscountess are those who have served as Prince or Princess of a Principality. Viscounts and Viscountesses may wear embattled coronets of silver or other non-metallic material, ornamented as they see fit, the overall height not to exceed three (3) inches.

Territorial Baron/Baroness is attained upon becoming Baron/Baroness of one of the Baronies (in alphabetical order: An Crosaire, Castlemere, Darkwater, Marcaster, Oldenfeld, Wyvernwoode). Territorial Barons and Baronesses may wear coronets of precious metal or other material with protrusions of six spheroids or precious stones, ornamented as they see fit, the overall height not to exceed two (2) inches or the top of the head.

Patent Level

The general requirements for receiving any Patent of Arms are: courtesy, chivalry, hospitality, courtly behavior, and knowledge or skill equal to that of the members of that Order. In addition, they must be willing to share their knowledge with others. Bestowed Peers (Chivalry, Laurels, Pelicans, Master of Defense, and Master Markspersons) may wear a circlet of precious metal with no protrusions above or below the band, with simple ornamentation, the overall height not to exceed one inch. Laurels may wear a laurel wreath meeting these standards.

There are six patent level orders recognized in Trimaris:

The Order of the Chivalry (KSCA): are outstanding fighters in armored weapons who have received recognition for their fighting skills and to being models of grace and courtly behavior. The Order's tokens are: A white belt, a gold chain, and gold spurs. Unadorned chains of gold are reserved for use by the Chivalry, but only if they have sworn their fealty to the Crown. Spurs of gold and simple white belts are reserved for use of the Chivalry.

The Order of the Laurel (OL): is bestowed upon those gentles who have shown quality and excellence in a craft or trade, be it an ART or a SCIENCE, and who share their knowledge by teaching their skill to others. The Order's tokens are: A Laurel Wreath Or, A Green Belt with Silver or Gold Laurel Wreaths. Members of the Order of the Laurel may wear caps of maintenance of vert, turned argent, a laurel wreath, or a circlet adorned with twelve pearls.

The Order of the Pelican (OP): is bestowed upon those gentles who have provided long-standing service in an administrative capacity to keep the Society functioning. The Order's tokens are: A Pelican in its Piety Argent, A Yellow Belt with Pelicans in their Piety Argent. Members of the Order of the Pelican may wear caps of maintenance of gules, turned plumetty argent goute de sange.

The Order of the Masters of Defense (OMD): bestowed upon gentles who have proven to be masters of fighting prowess in the field of rapier, dedicated to furthering the arts and history of rapier, and to being models of grace and courtly behavior. The Order’s token is a white collar which may be adorned with the orders symbol.

The Order of the Mark (OM): bestowed upon gentles who have proven to be masters of ranged martial combat and have shared their knowledge. Regalia reserved for the Order of the Mark are a set of nesting scale weights within and conjoined to a mascle fleury at the upper point. The regalia of the Order will be two white vambraces or bracers.

The Order of the Rose (OR): bestowed upon former Consorts of Trimaris following completion of their reign, shall bear a Patent of Arms. The Order's token is a rose.

Grant Level

The Crown may bestow a Grant of Arms to recognize exemplary and/or enduring service. Ordered Grants have precedence over unordered Grants of Arms. The proper form of address is “Lordship” or “Ladyship”. The associated title “Honorable Lord/Lady” is usually abbreviated as “HL” when written. The attainment of Territorial and Court Baronies carry Grants, as do the following awards:

Court Baron/Baroness is bestowed for exemplary and continuing service to the Kingdom. Court Barons and Baronesses may wear coronets of precious metal or other material with protrusions of six spheroids or precious stones, with simple ornamentation, the overall height not to exceed two (2) inches or the top of the head. They may be addressed as "Your Excellency."

Order of the Triskele Trimaris (OTT): the premier kingdom honor, given for exemplary service to the kingdom as a whole in any area of endeavor, as well as exemplary courtesy. The Order's token is: Azure, a triskele argent.

Order of the Silver Trident Trimaris (OSTT): the premier Arts and Sciences award, given for excellence in any Art or Science, as well as exemplary courtesy. The Order's token is: Azure, a trident argent.

Order of the Argent Sword of Trimaris (OASW): is the premier fighting award and is given for excellence in, education in, and the fostering of the art of heavy weapons combat, and exemplary courtesy. The Order's token is: Azure, a triskele between three swords in pall points to center argent. (Formerly known as the Order of the Trimarian Sword.)

Order of the Guard Trimaris (OGT): is awarded for recognition of potential in any of the martial arts. No token has yet been passed.

Order of the Arc d'Or (OAO): given to recognize the highest level of skill and training in archery, both in combat and at the butts. The Order's token is: Azure, a bow fesswise Or between three triskeles one and two argent.

Order of the Golden Lance (OGL): given to recognize the highest levels of achievement and excellence in the equestrian arts. The Order’s token is: Azure semy of triskeles argent, a lance Or

Order of the Argent Mantle of Trimaris (OAMT): the premier fighting award for excellence and dedication to the rapier arts. The Order’s token is: Azure, a mantle argent.

The Crown may bestow an unordered Grant of Arms (GOA) as they see fit.

Kingdom Armigerous Awards

The Crown may bestow Awards of Arms to those deemed worthy by their service or accomplishment. Ordered Arms have precedence over unordered Awards of Arms. The following orders are accompanied by an Award of Arms, if the recipient is not already armigerous:

Order of the Argent Scales of Trimaris (OAST): given for excellence in administrative service. The Order's token is: Argent scaly azure.

Order of the Trade Winds of Trimaris (OTWT): given for enduring and exemplary service in the Arts and Sciences. The Order's token is: Argent, an aeolus azure.

Order of the Silver Shield of Trimaris (OSST): given for personal excellence in any martial art except rapier including heavy weapons, archery, and live weapons. The Order's token is: Argent, on a triskele azure an escutcheon argent.

Order of the Azure Brace Trimaris (OABT): give for personal excellence in rapier. The order’s token is: Argent, per pale two swords crossed in saltire and a triskele azure.

The Crown may bestow an unordered Award of Arms (AoA) to those persons deemed worthy by their service or accomplishment.

Baronial Armigerous Awards

Each barony may have one order, which conveys an Award of Arms, usually its premier service award. Since the Baron and Baroness bestow the Award of Arms on behalf of the Crown, they must have the Crown's permission to give the award. The existing armigerous baronial awards are:

Order of the Wyvern's Claw (OWC): shall be the premier service award of the Barony of Wyvernwoode. Token : vert, Vert, a wyvern’s foot couped countorny argent

Order of the Cross and Serpent (OCS): the premier service award of the Barony of An Crosaire. Token: A saltire couped sable involved by a snake facing sinister vert armed and langued gules.

Order of the Trident Keype (OTK): shall be the premier service award of the Barony of Darkwater.

Token: Sable on an escallop inverted Or, a castle of three towers gules.

Order of the Beacon of Oldenfeld (OBO) : shall be the premier service award of the Barony of Oldenfeld. Token: (no blazon yet available)

Order of the Golden Citadel of Marcaster (OGC) : shall be the premier service award of the Barony of Marcaster. Token: (no blazon yet available)

Order of Saint John’s Castle of Castlemere (OSJC) shall be the premier service award of the Barony of Castlemere. Token: Vert, a two-towered argent issuant from a ford proper.

Kingdom Non-Armigerous Awards and Honors

The following kingdom awards do not convey arms:

Order of the White Scarf of Trimaris (OWST):is awarded for those who have achieved a grant level award in rapier combat in further recognition of their dedication to the Ladies of the Rose and the Queen and Princess of Trimaris. These gentles have demonstrated a high level of courtesy and dedication to the ideals of defense of the Rose and the rapier arts. (White Scarf of Trimaris is the registered name for the Cravat Blanche.)

The Order of the Cross of St. Joan (OCSJ.) The Cross of St Joan recognizes women for their inspiration to other woman fighters and accomplishments in the martial arts. Token: not yet blazoned

The Order of the Emerald Seas (OES):may be bestowed for service to the Consort at her/his discretion. Token: Barry wavy vert and argent, a triskele within a bordure Or.

The Order of the Trimarian Gratitude (OTG): may be bestowed for service to the Sovereign at his/her discretion. Token: Barry wavy azure and argent, a triskele within a bordure Or.

The Order of the Grey Beard (OGB.) may be bestowed to active fighter's age forty or over.

Token: per pale sable and azure, in saltire a crutch Or and a sword inverted proper, in chief a pair of eyeglasses argent stringed Or.

The Order of the Argent Estoile (OAE) may be bestowed for excellence in the Arts or Sciences in specific areas of endeavor. Token: quarterly azure and vert, an estoile a bordure embattled argent.

The Order of the Golden Galleon (OGG) may be bestowed for exemplary service as an autocrat or head cook. Token: Azure, a galleon Or.

The Order of the Trefoil Argent of Trimaris (OTAT) may be bestowed for exemplary courtesy, chivalry and period presence. Token: Argent, on triskele vert trefoil argent.

The Order of the Fletcher (OF), formerly known as the Order of the Sea Urchin, for service. Children under the age of 16. Token: (Fieldless) Four Japanese arrow notches conjoined in saltire bases to center azure.

The Order of the Herald's Treasure (OHTT) may be bestowed for exemplary and continued service as a herald. Token: A tressure argent on tabard sleeves.

The Order of the Healer's Lamp (OHL) may be bestowed for exemplary and continued service to the health and well-being of the populace. Token: Azure, on a lamp Or a fleam gules.

The Order of the Bards Laureate (OBL) may be bestowed for service as Poet, Troubadour, or Mask Laureate Trimaris. Token: (Fieldless) a Joscelyn wreathed azure and argent, belled argent.

The Order of the Mermaids Pearl (OMP) may be bestowed for exemplary and continued service by those gentles over the age of fifty. Token: Argent, a hand mirror azure silvered argent.

The Order of the Watchful Flame (OWF) may be bestowed for exemplary and continued service as a constable. Token: (not yet blazoned)

The Order of the Argent Palm (OAP) may be bestowed for enduring and continuing service in any field of endeavor. Token: azure, a palm tree couped within bordure argent.

The Order of the Argent Morning Star of Trimaris (OMS) may be bestowed for personal excellence in the martial arts, archery and live weapons with the exception of rapier. Token: Azure a morningstar bendwise within bordure argent.

The Crown's Order of Gratitude (COG) may be bestowed for service to the Sovereign and Consort of Trimaris. Token: per pale azure and vert, a triskele within a bordure or.

The Order of the Silver Saddle Trimaris (OSSaT) may be bestowed for personal excellence in any aspect of the equestrian arts. Token: Per fess azure and vert, a tournament saddle argent.

Order of the Azure Glove of Trimaris (OAG) Order given for personal excellence in rapier combat. The order's badge is: Argent, A Glove in a border wavy, azure.

Order of the Orbis Honorarum (OOH) Order give for continued and long term service to the Kingdom efforts at Gulf Wars. The order’s badge is: Not yet determined

Order of the Silver Sling Trimaris (OSST) Order for youth fighters (under 18) who show promise in any martial field. The order’s badge is: Not yet determined

Order of the Sea Wall (OSW) Order for service as a marshall. This order’s badge is: Not yet determined.

Baronial Non-Armigerous Awards

The Order of the Wyvern's Heart (OWH) may be bestowed for promise in the Martial Arts in service to the Barony of Wyvernwoode. Token: Vert, three wyverns passant in annulo argent winged bellied and sustaining a heart, a bordure Or.

The Order of the Wyvern's Scale (OWS) may be bestowed for service to the Barony of Wyvernwoode. Token: on an escutcheon wyvern erect argent.

The Order of the Wyvern’s Wing (OWW) may be bestowed for promise in the arts and sciences in the Barony of Wyvernwoode. Token: Vert, a triskelion of wyvern's wings Or, a bordure argent.

The Order of the House of the Serpent's Torque (OHST) may be bestowed for service to the Barony of An Crosaire. Token: a serpent torqued in annulo argent.

The Order of the Serpent’s Gem (OSG) May be bestowed for artistic accomplishment and promise in the Barony of An Crosaire. Token: None registered

The Order of the Serpent’s Coils (OSC) May be bestowed for promise in the martial arts in the Barony of An Crosaire. Token: None registered.

The Order of the Plume of the Angel Rouge (OPAR) may be bestowed for service to the Canton of Mathom Trove of the Barony of An Crosaire. Token: (fieldless) a feather fesswise gules.

The Order of the League of the Hidden Treasure (OLHT) may be bestowed for service to the Barony of Darkwater. Token: Sable, on a plate between four escallops inverted Or, a trident head gules, all within an orle argent.

The Order of the Acorns Glade (OAG) may be bestowed for promise in the arts or sciences to the Barony of Darkwater. Token: (Fieldless) Four oak leaves conjoined in saltire stems to center gules between four acorns conjoined in cross caps to center Or.

The Order of the Darkwater Defender (ODD) may be bestowed for promise in the Martial Arts in service to the Barony of Darkwater. Token: Barry wavy sable and argent a trident head gules.

The Order of the Cairn of Oldenfeld (OoCO) may be bestowed for service to the Barony of Oldenfeld. Token: No blazon available

The Order of the Silver Acorn of Oldenfeld (OSAO) may be bestowed for promise in the Arts or Sciences to the Barony of Oldenfeld. Token: Vert, an acorn within a bordure argent.

The Order of the Lion's Paw of Oldenfeld (OLP) may be bestowed for promise in the Martial Arts in service to the Barony of Oldenfeld. Token: Vert, a lion's paw erased Or within a bordure argent.

The Order of the Golden Well (OGW) may be bestowed for service to the Barony of Marcaster. Token: Azure, a natural fountain Or, a tierce wavy paly wavy argent and azure.

The Order of the Golden Standard (OGS) may be bestowed for promise in the Martial Arts in service to the Barony of Marcaster. Token: Azure, issuant from the battlements of a demi-tower a banner Or, a tierce wavy paly wavy argent and azure

The Order of the Golden Hearth (OGH) may be bestowed for promise in the Arts or Sciences to the Barony of Marcaster. Token: Azure, a brazier Or enflamed proper, a tierce wavy paly wavy argent and azure

The Order of the Saint John’s Bridge (OSJB) may be bestowed for service to the Barony of Castlemere. Token: Vert, a single-arched bridge argent and a ford proper.

The Order of Splendor (OS) may be bestowed for promise in the arts and sciences in the Barony of Castlemere. Token: Azure, a tower argent and in chief three estoiles Or, a bordure embattled argent.

The Order of Defenders of the Northern Fenn (ODNF) may be bestowed for promise in the martial arts in service to the Barony of Castlemere. Token: Vert, an arm armored and embowed sustaining a sword fesswise reversed argent issuant from a ford proper.

Order of the Starfish (OSF) Honorific baronial award, usable by all baronies, to award youth involvement. Token: None. Typically Starfish scrolls feature a starfish somewhere in the design.

Heraldic Honors

Augmentation of Arms: While it carries no precedence, at the Crown's pleasure, Augmentations of Arms may be bestowed upon individuals or groups who have rendered outstanding service to the kingdom or brought honor to Trimaris through their efforts. This is the highest and rarest of heraldic honors that can be bestowed in the kingdom.

While these honors carry no precedence, they may be bestowed upon heavy, light weapons, archers, individuals and groups at the Crown's pleasure.

Lion d'Or: given to the best fighter of the day for remarkable valour or skill in the martial arts.

Lion’s Pride: given to a group of fighters for demonstrated valor and excellence upon the field

Lancer: given for prowess and leadership on that field during wars.

Flower of Chivalry: given to the most courteous fighter on the field or an act of chivalry.

Crown's Acclaim for Heraldic Display: given for exceptional heraldic display for the day.

Scroll Wording Components

This section may be used in making commissioned scrolls or to adapt the standard wordings.

Most award texts are composed of the same set of key phrases arranged in different ways. Each of the phrases has a variety of equivalents, many of which are listed in this section. Phrases may be interchanged to suit your style, your favorite capital letter, the recipient, or the amount of space available.

Medieval award texts also followed a set pattern. They were composed of several parts, which varied in content and degree of usage according to the rank of the grantor, the chancery in which it was produced, and the time period. Many of these parts are present in the “typical” Trimarian award text. Every award text may be outlined as follows:

II. Intitulation

By request of the Signet Herald, all award wordings have been changed to read “We, the Crown Trimaris”, thereby making the texts more flexible and eliminating the problem of name spaces either too long or too short. The names will be affixed to the bottom of scroll, so not having them in the text is not a problem. They can, however, be added if the scroll in question is being done as a commission, with a specific date to be awarded, and the Monarchs’ names are known. If you are doing a replacement scroll commission, ask the recipient their preference.

Period award wordings seldom gave Kings or Queens a last name, so only first names are needed for our purposes. The names of the current Royalty are in Talewinds, as well as on the Trimaris website (www.trimaris.org). Double- and triple-check the spellings!!!

For those scrolls that do include the names, the following wordings may be used:

In some cases, the award is given only by the King/ Sovereign or only by the Queen/ Consort. Sometimes, Crowns have persona-based preferences for titles. Check the award descriptions and the sample wordings, and contact the Chart Signet if you are unsure.

Note: QUEEN BY RIGHT OF ARMS

At some point, the winner of a Crown Tournament will be a woman, and the Kingdom will then have as its next monarch a Queen "by Right of Arms." When this does happen, there will have to be changes to the intitulation of all of the scroll texts. These will have to read along the lines of

"... We (Queen’s first name), Queen by right of arms in the Kingdom of Trimaris, and (King’s first name), Our Consort and King ..."

Many variations are possible. Refer to the sample texts at the beginning of this section for alternate wordings, and make the necessary changes.

III. Notification and Exposition

This part is made up of two elementss: the lead-in phrase (examples below) and the reason, which is usually provided. If the reason is not given, “service to Our Realm” or “whose service has greatly benefited Our Realm” will do. Again, expositions may be adapted from the sample wordings.

The name of the recipient is usually included in the Notification and Exposition section. The name will, of course, be provided to you. Please double- and triple-check the spelling of all names. If you have any doubts about the spelling, check with the Sextant Herald in charge of the Order of Precedence.

When using adjectives to describe the recipient, tailor them to fit the person. If the sex of the recipient is not indicated by the name, it may be reflected in the choice of adjectives. If you are not sure of the gender implied by the name, contact the Court Herald or the Triskele Herald, or consult the Trimarian Order of Precedence. If you are in real doubt, use “they”, “their” and “them”.

IV. Disposition

This section states the award given to the recipient by the Crown or the Coronets. Check the name of the award and the proper spelling. You may include the badge for the award if one is available.

The standard wordings are best for most awards.

Never use the word “grant” or "elevate" in an award text unless you are specifically making a GOA (grant) or a peerage award. These two words tent to imply a particular level of award and we want to avoid causing confusion. Good alternatives are endow, bestow, render, present, confer, accord, and honor.

Some Kingdom level awards may include an Award, Grant or Patent of Arms. In some cases, a Baronial level award carries an Award of Arms, with the Crown’s permission. Others may have an Award or Grant of Arms added by the Crown’s choice. Do NOT add armigerous wordings to an award text unless instructed to do so. The recipient may already have their AOA, GOA, etc.

V. The Blazon and Emblazon

Few award texts include the blazon (heraldic description of an award badge or heraldic device) and emblazon (picture of the award badge or heraldic device), unless they are peerage pieces (done by commission) or replacement scrolls (usually also commissions).

If the recipient has already received an Award of Arms and has a device registered by the College of Heralds, the device may still be included in the illumination whether or not the award conveys a Grant or Patent.

VI. Corroboration and Date

Corroboration consists of a phrase confirming that the award has been given by the King and Queen (or in some cases, the territorial Baron and/or Baroness), with the addition of the date of the presentation and sometimes the place that the presentation took place. The name of the event may be used, but this, and that of the place given, is totally optional. The phrase used in corroboration consists of one of the openings listed below plus the date-place-event in various orders. For example:

VII. The Signature Spaces

Lines drawn in ink for signatures are not period, so if you want to use a line to indicate where the signatures should be, use a lightly penciled line. Signature spaces should not be indicated by writing Rex and Regina, or King and Queen, or Sovereign and Consort unless so directed, since each reign may use a different form of title.

On scrolls for the Order of the Rose the Queen’s name and signature must precede that of the King’s. Scrolls for the Emerald Seas are only signed by the Queen.

Art-Sci Scroll Wordings

Art-Sci scrolls are HONORS, not “awards” per se. Basic illumination is sufficient i.e., a nice initial, simple border, or very simple frame. They are not intended to be GOA level scrolls! Each scribe should try to turn in at least two A/S scrolls per year.

For dates, please leave an adequate space after “day of” for completion. If the wording “this (x) day of” is at the middle or end of a line, leave another full line below to finish the scroll. Spacings may be adjusted if you are doing the wording on site, and have the item name and recipient’s name available. Otherwise, leave the full lines as noted. Do not add titles for the Crown (such as King, Queen, Rex, etc.) or the Coronets. Crown and Coronet Acclaims have signatures, and their Majesties may add their names to the other scrolls as well.

Crown's Acclaim

Conversion of Society Calendar Dates

SCA newsletters and award ceremonies often specified dates using the SCA’s calendar which dates from the First Tournament, held on the first of May in the year 1966. In SCA reckoning, years are specified as “Anno Societatis” (Latin for “in the year of the Society”) followed by a number. In writing, the year usually appears as the initials A.S. followed by a roman numeral. For example:

April 30, 1996 was the 30th day of April, A.S. XXX (30), and May 1, 1996 was the 1st day of May, A.S. XXXI (31) May 1st is “New Years Day” in Society years.

Transportation of Scrolls

It is always best to transport scrolls flat. A portfolio may be made from pieces of strong cardboard or a commercially produced one can be purchased inexpensively. If you are going to store a scroll for any length of time, you should try to get an acid-free plastic carrier to protect the work. If you have time after finishing a scroll, you may want to make an inexpensive portfolio for the recipient to transport their scroll home without damage. NEVER, EVER FOLD IT! Another alternative is to provide a big yellow or white tyvek envelope for transport at least to keep it clean and dry.

The best way to transport the scroll is to take it to the event yourself or by way of another attendee. Make sure your delivery person knows who to give it to! If you are required to mail a scroll, you must ensure that, however it is wrapped, it arrives at its destination in the best possible condition. If at all possible, protect the scroll with a very stiff cardboard backing, or some other material that will not bend easily.

Address the parcel clearly: ABSOLUTELY NO CALLIGRAPHY on the label. If time is no problem, use the US Postal System. Sending it by registered mail moves it faster through the postal system than by ordinary first class. There are now basic-fee envelopes available from USPS for flat-rate shipping, which might be a good option. The flat-rate boxes may be useful for framed pieces, but wrap them with bubble-wrap to prevent breakage. Better, send the scroll unframed, even if in the same package, separated from glass with cardboard. If the frame has a plastic “glass” shipment will be safer.

If you are faced with a close deadline, send your work overnight via the US Postal Service or any of the courier services (UPS, Fed Ex, etc.). It will cost a little more, but you can be assured that it will get there on time. Just as you would double-check all spellings on the scroll (you did double-check, right?), double-check the name and address to which you are sending the scroll. Why have one more reason for the scroll being delayed in transit?

Check with the person to whom you are sending the scroll. Are they at home all day to receive overnight or Courier Service packages? They may not want to drive a half-hour or more to the post-office or courier service building to pick up a missed delivery. Can they receive mail at work? Some companies frown on receiving personal mail at work, and in some cases, all incoming mail is subject to being opened and examined.

It’s a good idea to keep a photocopy, scan, or photograph of the scroll before sending it. This way, you have a record of your work, can refer to it for future scrollwork, and can be an inspiration to others to learn calligraphy and/or illumination.

None of the following are “official” awards by the Kingdom standards, but all are adapted from those used at various local events, and are included here as a reference for those creating scrolls for local use. Change them as needed to fit your competition, your theme, etc.. Most are signed, if at all, by the Autocrat of the event, or the person in charge of the competition.

The Elusive X

Ok, so we understand that in period, the letter X was an opener for a lot of pages. In Latin, it works. In English, not so well. However, there are always a few scribes whose enthusiasm is unbridled, and who forget that there are so few words that begin with X. A dictionary was consulted. The conversation went something like:

“Xavier- proper name.”

“Can’t use that.”

“Not unless we get a bunch of Xaviers all of a sudden.”

“Xenophobe, xylophone, x-ray.. Oh! Xasis… oh, that’s x-axis. Phooey.”

“No, no! Wait! ‘Xaxis, Muse of creation and imagination’…”
