Advanced Placement Literature & Composition (Grade 12)
How to Read like a Professor
Thomas C. Foster
History and Criticism
Written by a college literature professor, this book will help the reader to recognize symbols, motifs, allusions, and themes that recur throughout both classic and modern literature. Foster’s sense of humor and down-to-earth writing style help to make this both an informative and entertaining read.
How to Read like a Professor was added to the summer reading upon enthusiastic suggestion from previous years’ AP Literature and Composition students who found the book to be an invaluable resource, not only for the course, but for reading in general.
REQUIRED STUDENT RESPONSE:
Students will annotate and highlight the central points of each chapter (see annotation/highlighting guidelines). “Mark it up” so that you can reference the ideas throughout the various units of the course when applicable.
Due First Day of School: Bring your book, annotations and notes with you to class.
Future Assignments: You will use your annotations during in-class discussions and writing assignments.
