Born in the city of Medellín, Colombia, Carlos obtained his High-School Diploma in Arts at the Instituto Musical Diego Echavarría in the same city, graduating with honors in 1997. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Music with honors in viola performance at Universidad EAFIT in Medellín, a Master of Music degree from the Escuela Soto-Mesa in Madrid, Spain, and a second Master of Music- Viola Performance degree from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. He completed his academic load (ABD) from the Doctoral program in Orchestral Conducting at Michigan State University in 2011.

Carlos strives to change young musician lives through music making. He serves as Orchestra Consultant, Music Education Lecturer, Guest Conductor, and String Clinician for the Batuta Foundation, Sinfónica Guillermo Uribe Holguín, the IMDE youth orchestra, and the Universidad Javeriana in Colombia. He is also Resident Conductor for the National Youth ensemble, the Filarmónica Joven de Colombia, leading this talented players in their yearly international tour, sharing the podium with the Music Director of Houston Symphony: Andrés Orozco-Estrada. Carlos has acted as Guest Conductor in the Houston Symphony, Alabama Symphony, Bogota Philharmonic, Cali Philharmonic, UNAB Symphony, Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra,Orquesta Sinfónica Eafit in Medellín, Filarmónica de Medellín, Encuentro de Orquestas Juveniles Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, the EMU and MSU Symphonic programs and numerous recitals on new music.

As an instrumentalist, he has played with the Orquesta Batuta Antioquia, Antioquia Youth Orchestra, the IMDE Youth Orchestra, Trujillo Youth Orchestra in Venezuela, the EMU Symphony and Collegium Musicum along with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Medellín and Orquesta Sinfónica de Colombia. In the year of 1997 he played with the Latin American Youth Symphony Orchestra in Caracas, Venezuela. An active chamber player, he enjoys music of the standard repertoire as much as works of modern and contemporary composers. He is also a founding member of the Orquesta Sinfónica University EAFIT, Dúo a Diez Cuerdas, Siakoro String Quartet and Ensamble de Cámara a ContraTiempo.

He has been adjunct faculty for theory, viola and orchestra in the IMDE, Universidad Eafit, the Foundation for Youth Orchestras in Venezuela (Fesnojiv), Escuela Soto Mesa in Madrid and Detroit Symphony Orchestra and its Civic Orchestra in Detroit, Michigan. He received honors scholarships during his High-school, College, and Graduate studies, along with the government Concejo de Medellín scholarship for outstanding performance in the national academic tests (ICFES), the Scholarship for Latin American Musicians sponsored by Fundación Carolina and Escuela Reina Sofíathat allowed him to begin his artist diploma studies in Madrid, the Carolina Oramas Scholarship for musicians sponsored by Colombian Government Institute for Superior Education and the Scholarship Program of COLFUTURO Foundation.

Since September of 2105, Carlos is Musical Ambassador and Assistant Conductor of the Houston Symphony, and Co-Host on the Musically Speaking Series with Andrés.  Every summer, Carlos is the main conductor of the Aruba Symphony Orchestra. He also leads the team of researchers that delve into the Colombian Symphonic Music with the Filarmonica Joven de Colombia.
