Dear Dr Anthony Freeling and the Senior Members of Hughes Hall,

We, the undersigned, are writing to express our deep concern with the designation of Prince Andrew as an Honorary Fellow of Hughes Hall.

Hughes Hall prides itself upon an ‘inclusive culture that promotes equality, values diversity and maintains an environment for study, work and living in which the rights and dignity of all its members are respected[1]. Such a statement is inherently difficult to achieve without exception; nevertheless, we feel that the College should be commended on how far it does go towards realising this ambition. However, fundamental to its fulfilment is a zero tolerance policy towards harassment, and sexual misconduct. We, therefore, believe the appointment of Prince Andrew as an Honorary Fellow is in direct conflict with the College’s values and threatens the very culture we all strive to create.

We do not wish, and do not have, to make allegations against the Prince. Already in public light is evidence enough of a man that fails to condemn harassment and sexual misconduct. Amidst a University-wide movement to improve how such complaints are dealt with, our association with the Prince is concerning. It adds to fears that such complaints will not be taken seriously; a rhetoric that the University has so badly failed to overcome, even in recent years.

We accept that there are no new allegations against the Prince; questions surrounding his associations and behaviour existed for many years before he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship at Hughes Hall in 2018. What is changing, however, is recognition of the gravity with which allegations of sexual assault, misconduct and harassment must be dealt with, and which many institutions (including this University) have so woefully failed to do, causing victims inexplicable hurt and allowing continued perpetration of such behaviour.

We make our plea to this College, which we so very much wish to see live up to its ambitious and admirable aspirations, to review the status of Prince Andrew as an Honorary Fellow.

We do appreciate that removing a Royal Honorary Fellow is a complicated matter that must be navigated with great sensitivity. Therefore, at this time, we are expressing our concern with the Prince’s involvement with Hughes Hall and implore you to review all possible choices. We would welcome an ongoing and open discussion between the College and the student body on this matter.
