Mount St. Helens Institute Behavioral Protocols
BEHAVIORAL PROTOCOLS
We expect all participants to follow our 3 R’s of Respect and hold each other accountable to these values.
The 3 R’s of Respect
- Respect for self:
- Reading all pre-trip instructions and coming prepared for the trip.
- Advocating for your needs during the trip (such as bathroom, snack break, etc.) and speaking up if something feels uncomfortable.
- Positive self-talk and encouraging this of others.
- Following instructions of staff and volunteers.
- Actively participating in activities.
- Behaving in a safe and responsible manner.
- Contribute to a safe environment for all.
- Respect for others:
- Respecting the personal needs and space of others on the trip.
- Respecting others who are speaking to the group.
- Respecting others that visit and use the spaces and facilities we share. This includes cleaning up to prepare the space for the next group.
- Contributing to an inclusive trip that supports our commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
- If you experience or witness something that makes you uncomfortable, speak up to a staff member.
- Respect for place:
- Respecting that we are guests to every place we visit at Mount St. Helens. The landscape of Mount St. Helens is the Traditional Cultural Property of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe and the Confederated Bands and Tribes of the Yakama Nation. These are both thriving communities that continue to live near the mountain. The Cowlitz Indian Tribe is an important partner to MSHI, serving on our board as well as collaborating on joint programs serving Cowlitz youth and habitat restoration. Read more about the cultural context for visiting Mount St. Helens here.
- Recognizing that Mount St. Helens has special significance to many people whose lives and communities have been impacted by volcanic eruptions.
- Following “Leave No Trace” principles at all times, including on trails and in facilities.
- Plan ahead & prepare (1 finger up)
- Travel & Camp on Durable Surfaces (2 fingers walking on a trail)
- Dispose of Waste Properly (3 fingers making a "cat hole")
- Leave What You Find (4 fingers framing a picture)
- Minimize Campfire Impacts (5 fingers as a flame),
- Respect Wildlife (3 fingers on each hand as antlers)
- Be Considerate of Other Visitors (peace sign and a high five)
Together as a group agree to these guidelines. Remind participants that failure to adhere to any of the above guidelines may result in dismissal of the participant or cancellation of the program.
