Now, total your book expenses from the first side.
Total Book Expense for Fall 2017: $______________________________
Let’s add to that a “life speedbump.” These are problems real students have reported just within the past year.
Roll the dice one more time.
1 = Laptop has blue screen of death and cannot be repaired…..$400 for new laptop
2 = Broke a tooth while eating lunch…….$600 unexpected dental bill
3 = Child sick, insurance co-pay plus lab work bill…$125 out-of-pocket
4 = Starter fails on automobile……..$200 to be paid that day so car can be used for work and school
5 = Had to reduce work hours because of going back to school……wages reduced by $400/month
6 = Smooth sailing…….no unexpected expenses
Total Book + Life Event Expenses for Fall 2017: $___________________
Now consider doubling that for an academic year, and additional costs for any summer or short-semester courses. In most of New York, minimum wage is $9.70/hour before deductions. How many hours of work will it take to cover these expenses? Or, if rolled into a student loan, how long will it take to pay for these $150 books each semester?
Open textbooks and OER courses won’t remove the burden of textbook expense entirely, but can make overall expenses significantly more manageable for many of our students.
