Translation:

Mainz, 31st December 1923.

My dear old friend,

A thousand thanks for your kind letter of the 27th which I have just received, and the reading of which has given me a double pleasure 1) by its highly interesting content 2) but also by the clear typing. You have a very characteristic handwriting, but now and again it does give one a difficult puzzle!

Your trip to Rome must have been a real triumphal journey and I can imagine what a pleasure it must have been for Mrs. László to witness the recognition you received.^[1] Our quite special congratulations on the award of your high decoration. Your collection must have become very comprehensive,^[2] and it is a pity that you do not live in France and cannot wear the decorations.^[3] In England you would, like I, put them in a drawer, but they nevertheless give pleasure, and if you come to Paris or to Rome you can decorate the hero’s chest and impress society!

We have received the Christmas number of the Illustrated London News and enjoyed the beautiful reproductions [3178] [4417] although they were already known to us from earlier publications.^[4] I always think that one day you should paint an old man’s head à la Voltz and it is a pity that you have not immortalised one in a nice picture.

I cannot tell you how much we enjoy following your triumphal procession and the good health and happiness that have stayed with you and your loved ones. But do not take on too much; keep your freshness by giving yourself more rest and choosing your sitters. You don’t have to paint everybody – leave some of them for your colleagues, and then you will find time to see your old friends. We counted on your coming and were very disappointed when we did not hear from you further. We now count all the more on your promise to catch up very soon with your visit to us, and we shall then be able to relate a lot of things to you.

We of course are not favoured by fortune like you, and the only good news is that Elma has remarried a Swedish judge, Oláf Wickman og Rundelsgaten, in Malmö.^[5] The wedding was held quietly in Malmö on the 11th of this month. Wickman is a good looking dark haired man as tall as Elma and the same age, a clean-shaven English type and very kind, and we hope that he will bring lasting happiness to Elma who has gone through such difficult times. Christmas for us, since we lost René at Christmas,^[6] is a sad day, and every time it brings us new unhappiness – 2 years ago was Friedel’s foot operation,^[7] last year in Bavaria the diagnosis that my wife had to have an urgent mastectomy, and this year Friedel is again in the Carl Olga Hospital in Stuttgart, where her other foot was operated on and the previous operation was corrected. It was a 6 hour butchery, the details of which I do not want to horrify you with. The poor woman will not be able to come home for 6-8 weeks. As if this were not enough, her little son^[8] got such a severe attack of laryngeal diphtheria that the worst was expected. The other children were vaccinated and isolated, and it is to be hoped that they will be alright. Tomorrow the boy will be examined to see if he is free of infection and the home will then be disinfected, and only then can one start thinking about the christmas presents! My wife has become so exhausted through the care and the worry and responsibility that I want to send her to Friedel – Friedel for encouragement and my wife for recovery, through enforced rest in the hospital. This is our Merry Xmas and our happy New Year!! One cannot ask for more – or should we ask:”What next?”.

It would be nice if your good wishes were fulfilled, even partially. We could certainly do with it, but you will see that Friedel’s feet will never recover normality and the little girl who was once so graceful will waddle about like a duck for the rest of her life. No my dear friend, fate has been so exceptionally cruel to us that among all our friends and acquaintances we hold the record.

For the kind gift you sent through the Westminster Bank I gratefully thank you in the name of my grand children.^[9] Each of them has received a Pound in their piggybank from Uncle Fülöp and Aunt Lucy but, dear Laszlóbatschi [sic] you must not do this again, however much it is meant in friendship. There’s a good boy!

Please assure Lucy of our love and regard and once again we send you our most affectionate greetings and good wishes for the New Year, and our affectionate goodbye. | Your faithful

I enclose (photographs) of the 3 Strecker children.^[10] The eldest, taken at an awkward age, has not come out well and when everyone is free from the infection I shall take another picture and send it soon.

One more thing! Professor Thedy^[11] sends you his greetings He was our guest for 3 weeks and painted 3 men and a lady and 2 children’s portraits which were all very successful: 75 Dollars per picture!!!

Mein lieber alter Freund,

Tausend Dank für Ihre lieben Zeilen vom 27t die soeben hier eintreffen + deren Lesen mir zwiefach Freude bereitet. 1) durch den hochinteressanten Inhalt 2) aber durch die klare Druckschrift. Sie haben zwar eine sehr charakteristische Handschrift aber hie + da gibt sie einem doch schwere Rätsel auf!

Ihre Romreise muss ja eine wahre Triumphreise gewesen sein + ich kann mir denken welche Freude es für Frau Laszló gewesen sein muss Zeugin Ihrer Anerkennung zuz sein. Zur Verleihung des hohen Ordens unsere ganz besonderen Glückwünsche! Ihre Sammlung muss sehr umfangreich geworden sein + es ist schade, dass Sie nicht in Frankreich leben und die Auszeichnungen tragen können. In England werden Sie dieselben – wie ich, in die Schublade legen, aber Freude macht es doch + wenn Sie nach Paris oder Rom kommen, können Sie sich die Heldenbrust schmücken + der Gesellschaft imponieren!

Die Xmas number der Illustrated London News haben wir dankend empfangen + uns aufs Neue der schönen Reproduktionen erfreut, wenngleich uns die Dargestellten bereits durch frühere Publikationen bekannt waren. Ich meine immer Sie sollten mal einen schönen alten Männerkopf à la Voltz bringen + bedaure dass Sie denselben nicht in einem schönen Bild festgehalten haben. –

Wie sehr wir uns freuen Ihren Triumphzug zu verfolgen + die Gesundheit + das Glück das Ihnen + Ihren Lieben treu bleibt kann ich Ihnen garnicht sagen. – Aber muten Sie sich nicht zu viel zu, sondern halten Sie sich durch etwas mehr Ruhe + die Auswahl der Ihnen liegenden Modelle frisch. Sie müssen ja nicht alle Leute malen – lassen Sie Ihren Collegen auch etwas übrig + dann finden Sie auch Zeit nach Ihren alten Freunden zu sehen. Wir hatten auf Ihr Kommen gerechnet + waren sehr enttäuscht als wir nichts mehr von Ihnen hörten. Um so bestimmter rechnen wir aber jetzt auf Ihr Versprechen Ihren Besuch recht bald nachzuholen + können Ihnen dann viel erzählen.

Freilich sind wir nicht vom Glück, wie Sie, begünstigt + können Ihnen von Erfreulichem nur die Wiederverheiratung von Elma mit einem schwedischen Richter Oláf Wickman og Rundelsgaten in Malmö melden. Die Hochzeit fand am 14. des Ms. in aller Stille in Malmö statt. Wickman ist ein schöner, schwarzer Mensch, so gross + so alt wie Elma, glatt rasiert englischer Typus + sehr sympathisch + wir hoffen, dass er Elma (die ja viel durchgemacht hat) ein dauerndes Glück schafft. – Weihnachten ist für uns, seitdem wir René auf Weihnachten verloren haben, ein trauriges Fest, zumal uns jede Weihnachten neues Unglück bringt. – Vor 2 Jahren war es Friedels Fussoperation, voriges Jahr in Bayern die Diagnose, dass sich meine Frau raschtens einer Brustamputation unterziehen müsse + in diesem Jahr liegt Friedel wieder im Carl Olga Krankenhaus in Stuttgart, woselbst sie ihr den zweiten Fuss transplantierten + den ersten corrigierten.

Es war eine 6 stündige Metzelei mit deren grausigen Einzelheiten ich Sie nicht entsetzen möchte. Die Arme wird vor 6-8 Wochen nicht zurück kommen können. Damit aber nicht genug, bekam ihr kleiner Junge kurz vor Weihnachten einen so schweren Anfall von Kehlkopf-Diphterie, dass das Schlimmste zu fürchten war. Die übrigen Kinder bekamen Seruminjiktionen [sic] + wurden isoliert + es bleibt zu hoffen, dass sie frei ausgehen. Morgen soll untersucht werden ob der Junge bazillenfrei ist, dann wird die Wohnung desinfiziert + dann erst kann an die Christbescherung gedacht werden! Meine Frau hat sich durch die Pflege, die Angst + Verantwortung derart heruntergebracht, dass ich sie zu Friedel schicken will. Friedel zur Beruhigung, meiner Frau zur Erholung durch die erzwungene Ruhe im Krankenhaus. – Das ist unsere Merry Xmas + our happy new Year!! Mehr kann man doch nicht verlangen – oder sollen wir fragen. „what next“? –

Schön wäre es ja wenn Ihre guten Wünsche, wenn auch nur zum Teil, in Erfüllung gingen. – Wir könnten es ganz gut gebrauchen, aber Sie werden sehen, dass Friedels Füsse nie mehr wieder in Ordnung kommen + dass das so graziös gewesene Persönchen ihr Leben lang weiterwatschelt wie eine Ente. Nein, lieber Freund, das Schicksal hat uns aussergewöhnlich scharf angepackt + wir haben von allen Freunden + Bekannten weitaus den Record.

Für Ihre liebenswürdige Sendung durch die Westminsterbank sage ich Ihnen im Namen meiner Enkel den allerherzlichsten Dank. – Jedes hat von Onkel Fülöp + Tante Lucy ein Pfund in die Sparbüchse bekommen – aber – guter Laszlobatschi, - das dürfen Sie nicht wiedertun, so freundlich es auch von Ihnen gedacht ist. There’s a good boy!

Versichern Sie Frau Lucy unserer Liebe + Verehrung und nehmen Sie nochmals unsere innigsten Neujahrswünsche und herzlichsten Grüsse entgegen.-

Einliegend die 3 Strecker Kinder, das Älteste im undankbaren Alter ist nicht gut ausgefallen + soll (wenn Alles bazillenfrei ist) nochmals aufgenommen werden + dann schicke ich’s nach. –

Noch eins! Professor Thedy lässt Sie grüssen. Er war 3 Wochen unser Gast + malte 3 Männer, Damen und 2 Kinderporträts die sämtlich sehr gut ausgefallen sind; - Das Bild zu 75 Dollar!!! ein Exempel deutscher Zustände!!!
