Charity Needs Foundation was founded by Jonathan Fleming a photojournalist known for his pictures during the 1990’s dance music revolution and his book, “What Kind of House Party Is This?”.
During his time as a photographer for the dance music magazine, Mixmag, Jonathan often wanted to go off beat and cover more photojournalistic content, but the opportunities could never be pursued due to the commitment that was given to the magazine.
Although it took many years on from his time photographing and documenting good time parties around the world, the pursuit of such photojournalistic content was always in mind.
So why was that pursuit so strong and what does it have to do with Charity Needs?
Well, Jonathan often wanted to help and support charities, but didn’t actually trust that his donation would really reach the cause he wanted to support. He looked around for charities that openly showed what they did with the donations and kept you up-to-date with what they had done, along with information about how much went to administration, but that level of transparency seemed impossible to obtain.
It was because of that inability to find such transparency and the difficulty of searching for worthy causes to support, that Jonathan thought to establish a website that made the process of finding charities or other voluntary sector organisations and their immediate campaigns or concerns as easy as, the click of a button.
The name of the site had to reflect what it’s purpose was without anyone even entering the site and so ‘Charity Needs’ was registered before heading off to the Charity Commission of England & Wales (the charities regulator) to convince them that ‘Charity Needs’ as a foundation Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) was the right type of establishment for the organisation’s purposes.
Being as there were no registered charitable organisations utilising the internet in such a platform centric way as Charity Needs was to build for the public and bona-fide voluntary sector organisations globally, CNF was give it’s registration and allowed to operate as a promotional charity for this sector.
And so Charity Needs Foundation (CNF) was born.
