MONASH-WARWICK INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIVE MOOT

The Monash Law Students’ Society, in collaboration with the Warwick Law Students’ Society, is proud to announce the inaugural year of the International Collaborative Moot, which will see three Monash Law Students flown to Warwick, UK, to participate in a collaborative moot.

WHO:

1.        Student Coach - an extremely experienced law student with demonstrated success at LSS and external mooting competitions.

2.        Senior Mooter - a law student who has previously competed with success in the Monash LSS General Moot and who has completed Property Law B.

3.        Junior Mooter - a law student who has previously competed with success in the Monash LSS First Year Moot or LSS JD Moot and who has not yet completed Property Law B or equivalent.

WHAT:

Week 1: Monday 3 February 2014 the three students from Monash and three students from Warwick are given a copy of the problem, but they are NOT told which side they represent. Students must work together to research the area of law and identify areas of dispute.

Week 2: Students are divided into their teams and meet each other over Skype and/or email. Teams will need to work efficiently around time-differences and communicate clearly to allocate the work. The teams shall be as follows:

Team 1: Monash Coach, Warwick Senior Mooter, Monash Junior Mooter

Team 2: Warwick Coach, Monash Senior Mooter, Warwick Junior Mooter

Week 3: The Monash team is flown to Warwick to arrive on Monday, 17 February 2014 (UK Time). Over the week both teams will take part in some moot skills sessions with a local law firm, speak to high school students considering a future in the law, hone and practice their moot submissions and attend the Warwick LSS’s annual law ball (remember to pack for Black Tie). The experience culminates with the collaborative moot and an anticipated flight home on Sunday, 23 February 2014.

HOW MUCH:

Students participating will be asked to contribute an amount to the cost of their flights as the Alliance fund grant extends to cover up to AU$1450.00, per student, for flights. Once selected, the Monash LSS will book the flights on behalf of students and advise of the final contribution required.

All other costs (excepting spending money and possibly some meals) will be covered by the two LSSs through the Alliance fund grant.

HOW TO APPLY:

If you are interesting in participating in this exciting opportunity please email your application:

Re: [First Name] [Last Name] – [Junior/Senior] Student Application

Please provide a cover letter (1 page) and curriculum vitae - focusing in particular on your demonstrated interest and success in mooting, legal competitions, debating or public speaking.

Students must be able to commit to working on their submissions over Weeks 1 and 2.

Applications must be submitted by no later than 10:00 pm on Tuesday 21 January 2014. I apologise for the short deadline – funding was only confirmed on the evening of 16 January 2014 and the Monash team must be selected as soon as possible in order to purchase flights.

All applications will be reviewed jointly by Tim Rankin (LSS Director of Competitions 2013) and Dr Adam McBeth (Convenor of Mooting and Advocacy, Monash Faculty of Law). Successful students will be advised via email. Note: the date for this email will be advised once the quantity of applications is known.
