About The Black Foundation of Community Networks (BFCN)

The Black Foundation of Community Networks (BFCN) is a non-profit organization founded in 2011 and based in Woodbridge, Ontario. BFCN provides free and low-cost programs and services to support Black communities and also connects people with resources and other local organizations. There are three key pillars to our work: Community Advocacy, Community Resources, and Community Programs which includes the BFCN Scholarship Program.

Each year BFCN presents annual scholarships and awards to Black youth pursuing post-secondary undergraduate education in Canada. These $1,000 awards are granted to students who have demonstrated community involvement, leadership qualities and financial need. To learn more and apply for the 14th Annual BFCN Scholarships and 11th Annual Aim 2 Achieve Awards, please visit bfcn.ca/scholarships. Applications are launched in April and due July 31 of each year.

The BFCN Scholarship Directory is one of our most important initiatives. Post-secondary education is not widely accessible and we believe that all youth should have access to the educational opportunities they wish to pursue. The BFCN Scholarship Directory is an accurate and informative resource of scholarships, bursaries, and awards to help students pay for post-secondary undergraduate education in Canada.

Each year, thousands of dollars go unclaimed because students are unaware of what is available and information is often outdated or inaccessible. Our hope is that this directory will continue to guide students, families, and educators towards securing financial support. Student achievement is one of our main goals and scholarships and resources such as these can help youth achieve their goals both in and out of school.

BFCN is a volunteer run organization and is always looking for support. If you would like to collaborate or make a donation, please email info@bfcn.ca or call 416-566-2731. We look forward to connecting and thank you for your investment in our work! Together we can strengthen and support the Black family unit and improve student achievement, one student, one adult, one family at a time.

President’s Message

Dear Students, Parents, Caregivers, and Educators,

We are so happy to announce the launch of the BFCN Scholarship Directory! We hope that you will continue to find this resource informative and useful whether you are a student, parent, family member, or educator. We believe that education is one of the keys to success and that all youth should have the opportunity to advance their academic careers with further educational opportunities. Scholarships, bursaries and awards help make these goals more achievable by financially assisting students with the often inaccessible and high costs of post-secondary education.

We created this directory to highlight existing scholarships, bursaries and awards that are available for students pursuing post-secondary undergraduate education in Canada. The BFCN scholarship directory continues to grow and we hope that each scholarship, bursary, and award is granted to a youth in our community. Each page in the directory represents a different entry and includes a summary of the criteria as well as important information you need in order to apply. Entries that are highlighted in blue represent scholarships, awards, and bursaries whose due dates have not yet been confirmed. We have also included a personalized checklist at the bottom of each page; however, it is very important to carefully read the criteria and instructions on each organization's website or application as information can and does change. BFCN is not liable for any inaccuracies which may appear in this document.

As always, this resource is a work in progress and will be updated throughout the year. If you are an organization or an individual who knows of any other scholarships which were not included in this directory, please help us by filling out this Google Form and/or forwarding the information to us at info@bfcn.ca. Please share this resource widely so we can increase overall access and get it into the hands (or on the screens) of our youth. Thank you to everyone who has shared the Scholarship Directory over the years and given feedback! For more information or to share your feedback, please contact us at info@bfcn.ca or at 416-566-2731.

Thank you for your continued support.

President

Application Tips & Tricks

  • Confirm that you are eligible for the award and meet (most of) the criteria. If you’re not sure, ask, and be prepared to make the case for why you should still be considered!

  • Contact the organization if you ever have questions about the application process.

  • Prepare in advance and give yourself enough time to complete the application.

  • Read the instructions very carefully. One small error can eliminate your application!

  • Take note of the due date and time. Does the application need to be received by the date or only postmarked (i.e. in the post office by the date)? Be mindful of any stated submission time (e.g. before 11:59 PM).

  • If it’s a paper application, use a black pen, unless otherwise specified. If you’re submitting online and get to select a font, be sure to choose one that is more neutral and easy to read (e.g. Arial vs Pinyon Script).

  • Do a practice/rough copy before completing the real application. Proofread a few times and then send it to a friend to proofread again!

  • Write a generic 500 word letter of intent outlining your goals, achievements, academic and career plans. Most scholarships require a letter or essay of some form. If you have a generic one completed, all you have to do is modify it based on the criteria of the scholarship you are applying for!

  • The tip above ^ also applies for Cover Letters and Resumes!

  • Update your letter of intent, cover letter and resume as you gain new experiences so it’s always ready to go.

  • When writing, be yourself and be honest! Try to set yourself apart from others. Don't just list your accomplishments or activities. Explain them and demonstrate why they make you more qualified and deserving. You got this!

  • Ask a trusted professional (e.g. teacher, coach, or employer) to provide a good reference. If relevant, consider asking them to be your reference for the year instead of just one application.

  • Give your references enough time to prepare the reference letters. If possible, ask for the letters to be submitted on official letterhead.

  • Order a sufficient amount of transcripts, especially before the school year ends. Confirm if official copies are needed for the application.

  • Triple-check your application package to ensure all documents are included and in the right order or format.

  • Smile for the camera! Have a high resolution digital headshot photo ready to go as it is usually a requirement for applications.

  • Have a question? Call BFCN at 416-566-2731 or contact us via email at info@bfcn.ca!

  • Know that you are important and worthy regardless of the outcome of your scholarship application!
