The children will:

  • Observe and describe plants.
  • Identify some things plants need. 

  1. Have the children share what they know about plants.
  2. Use a Know, Wonder, Learn Chart.
  3. Read “Planting a Rainbow.”
  4. Lead the children into discussion about various plants shown in the book.
  5. Show different leaves.
  6. Ask:  What is a plant? How are the plants different? What color were the plants? What made the plants grow?
  7. Have the children sing “Plants.”
  8. Use Flip Chart page 15 to review vocabulary terms before beginning to teach lesson
  9. Guide ora vocabulary development by asking the following questions: What kind of plants do you recognize? Which is larger__the tree or the bush? Where does grass grow? How are plants getting the water they need? Which of these plants would you find in a garden?
  10. Discuss the different kinds of plants; however, all plants need water, air, sunshine, food, and space to grow.
  11. Have the the children use picture clues to answer the following questions: How is a bush and a tree different? How is a tree and a bush the same? What do they need to grow? 
  1. What unit of measurement did you use to determine which was the longest or shortest?
  2. How are the plants different?
  3. What color were the plants?
  4. What made the plants grow?
