Enhancement Activities 

    

Native American Civilizations and the geographic regions of America        Due by __________ 

“Enhancement Activities” are assignments that add-to and develop the material that is covered in the classroom.  You are required to complete ONE activity of your own choosing.  The more complicated the activity, the more “points” it is worth.  The number of “points” awarded will depend on the accuracy, completeness, and effort given to each assignment based on Distinguished, Proficient, Apprentice, and Novice scale.

When turning in an activity; make sure your name is on the activity, your period number, and mark specifically which option you have chosen from the following list:

  1.  Create a diorama that accurately portrays the geography of one region, and how the Native American’s were impacted by it.  How do they cope with their environment and modify it?  Complete ONE 3x5 index card that summarizes what you have created.  Your peers should be able to identify the region you are portraying without your notecard.  140pts

  1. Create an infographic that accurately portrays the culture of one Native American tribe.  It should include 5 text boxes that further describe that tribe’s unique features.  The pictures should showcase the features of that tribe and their beliefs.  Think “Eyewitness Books” style.  120pts

  1. Create a crossword puzzle of 25 terms that relate to geography of ONE specific region and the cultures of the Native American tribes that live there.  You must include a separate answer sheet.  This crossword must be original to you.  100pts

  1. Create a YouTube video that teaches someone about a region.  It should be educationally focused and be able to be used by the teacher to instruct using a variety of shots like close, long, and medium shots.  Information shows a depth of understanding of the geography of that region and the tribe’s efforts to cope with their environment.  Be sure to include how their culture is shaped by their region.  Tell us about a specific tribe that exists in that region and their unique cultural aspects.  150pts

  1. Create a journal entry.  This entry will be about how you have journeyed from your tribe to a new region to trade.  What would each region offer that would be worth the journey to trade?  What differences would you notice about this new tribe and how would you feel about being in this new environment? 110pts

  1. Create a picture book that is at least 10 pages long that would describe a region and its tribes to a 5th grader.  Even though it is a picture book there should still be informative to read that accurately tells about your topic.  Be sure to complete it so it looks like a book and is bound with pictures and a cover.  130pts

  1. Create a graphic organizer that compares 2 regions.  Utilizes at least 25 specific facts and pictures  to showcase how each region is different and similar.  100pts

The product is complete, neat, and the option chosen enhances the content.

Proficient

90%

Student meets the standards with a quality product that shows an understanding of the content with historical details and connections between concepts.  The student conveys some of the importance/impact of the concepts.  It is written at grade level with minor problems with sentence structure, tone, and grammar that may not effectively capture the time period being written about.   The product is 90% complete, neat, and the option chosen is effective in conveying the content.

Apprentice

80%

Student meets the standards with a product that is acceptable and shows some depth of understanding and has some historical details.  The product shows a basic understanding of the content but is lacking.  It is written almost at grade level and the errors in grammar, sentence structure, and tone do not keep the reader from understanding the content, but keep the product from being as successful.  It may have issues with capturing the time period being written about, and instead sounds modern.  The product is 80% complete, neat, and the option chosen conveys the content.

Novice

70%

Student does not meet the standard, but has made an effort towards it.  They are required to correct it.   The product shows little understanding of the content and has very few historical details, if any.  It is written below grade level with extensive problems with sentence structure, grammar, and tone that keep the reader from understanding the content.  It does not capture the time period studied.  The product is incomplete, messy, and doesn’t convey the content.  

Bovice

Below a 70%

Student does not come near the standard, and has made little or no effort to complete the product.  They are required to correct this!
