Spanish 1.1 is an introductory course, designed to teach ACTFL Novice Low skills. This course is taught primarily in English.
By the end of this course, students will be able to speak greetings, identify themselves, and name objects. Using the special characters of the language, they can write familiar words and phrases. Students will listen for recognition of words and high frequency and will practice reading words that are easily recognized in context.
Content in the course includes greetings, descriptions and colors, time, days, seasons, numbers, countries and nationalities, the culture of Mexico, and informal and formal speaking situations. Students speak in present tense language to conjugate AR IR and ER verbs and explore coordinating conjunctions, and prepositions.
Expectations for the student include completing writing and speaking assessments, active engagement in their own learning, practicing vocabulary over time, comprehending grammar patterns, practicing negation, participating in simple conversations and speaking prompts, and analyzing and comparing cultural products, practices and perspectives of Mexico.
