The present portrait seems to be an unfinished and rejected painting of the sitter. In 1907 the artist also painted a formal portrait of the Grand Duchess [5933] as a pendant to a portrait of her husband Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse and by Rhine [5937].
