Beginning September 2016, Google will be launching new requirements for the Certified Trainer Program. If you plan to apply in October, please do not purchase the Trainer Essentials exams. We recommend that you take the Google Certified Educator Level 1 and Google Certified Educator Level 2 instead. The 411 on Google’s New Educator Certifications

Google recently updated the educator certification options to make them more relevant to educators interested in elevating their skills in educational technology and quantifying their official status by becoming Google certified. After purging through Google’s site on the Google for Education Training Center, we came up with a synopsis of the “must know” details of the new Google for Education certification programs. Here’s what we came up with...

Google Certified Educator 
This is designed for educators and classroom teachers who wish to demonstrate proficiency in using Google for Education tools. The Level 1 status indicates that an educator is able to successfully implement Google Apps for Education into their teaching practice in order to enhance teaching and learning. The Level 2 status indicates that an educator is able to successfully integrate a wider range of Google for Education tools and other technologies in order to transform their teaching practice.

Google Certified Educator Level 1 Fundamentals Training

By reading, watching videos, and doing activities, you’ll learn how to integrate Google in your classroom. You can start and stop lessons at any time; your progress will be tracked through the course. At the end of this course, you'll be ready to take the exam to become a Google Certified Educator Level 1.

-unit review exam are free (5 - 8 questions per unit review)

-self-paced

-Google Certified Education Level 1 Exam is 120 minutes

-Cost of Google Certified Education Level 1 is $10

-Once you register for this exam, you have 7 days to complete it

-If you don't pass an exam, you can take it again after 14 days. If you don't pass a second time, you must wait 60 days before you can take it a third time. If you don't pass the third time, you must wait a year before taking it again. Payment is required each time you take an exam.

-Individuals who have achieved this certification may publicize their status with their personalized certificate and badge.

-This certification is valid for 24 months

-Recertification: exam can be retaken 30 days prior to or up to 60 days after the 24-month renewal date

Google Certified Educator Level 2 Advanced Training

Process for Registering for Level 1 and 2 Exams

Please register for the exam at least 24 hours prior to the time you wish to take it. After registration, it may take up to ~24 hours to create your test account.

  1. Create a Kryterion account or sign in if you've already taken an exam using Kryterion.
  2. From the home page, select that you want to take either the Google Certified Educator Level 1 or Google Certified Educator Level 2 exam. Please make sure you are registering for the proper exam.
  3. Register for the exam. You'll receive an email receipt for your registration.
  4. Add noreply@myeducert.org to your contacts. You'll be invited to take your exam by this email sender when your exam domain is provisioned (this may take up to 24 hours).
  5. Look for an email from noreply@myeducert.org with your exam sign-in credentials. This email will contain your exam log-in / username and password in the form of [YourKryterionID]@myeducert.org.
  6. Sign in to the certification exam platform with your exam sign-in credentials
  7. [YourKryterionID]@myeducert.org and start your exam. Please remember that this is NOT your Google Apps or personal Gmail account.

Exams for Level 1 and Level 2 can be purchased in bulk directly from the testing agency Kryterion by filling out this form, saving it as a PDF and emailing it to mellis@KryterionOnline.com. Google for Education Certified Trainer

Designed for individuals who deliver training or professional development to other educators. You may be a professional trainer at a partner organization; tech integrator or coach at a school or district; or maybe an independent consultant. This program requires you to have experience delivering training on Google for Education tools.

You need to pass the 4 required exams (Gmail, Drive & Docs, Calendar, Sites) and a minimum of 1 other elective in order to achieve the Trainer Essentials certificate.

-Application Requirements

Training Experience: Provide a training resume highlighting relevant work experience, training and speaking sessions, and other awards or certifications. Please limit to 2 pages. See example.

Provide 3 references for trainings you've delivered in the past year - ideally from 3 different training sessions and/or organizations. Your references will receive a short survey to complete about their experience with your training.

Training Style: Submit a 3-minute video introducing yourself and showcasing your training skills. The first minute of the video should give the audience an idea of who you are and your training style. The final 2 minutes of the video should highlight one feature of Google Apps for Education, Chromebooks, Chrome, or Android Tablets with Play for Education in a classroom or school setting. Screencasts are preferred. See example.

Training Strategy: Create a case study (using this template) that will give us a good understanding of your training strategy, including planning, implementation, evaluation, and sample learning materials. See example.

4-Maintain your Trainer Status

Trainers should demonstrate that they are continually developing their skills and staying ahead of the curve. To remain in the program, trainers must:

-Complete and report a minimum of 12 training sessions per year
-Hold a valid Google Educator certificate

-Follow all program guidelines including guidelines for badges and branding

-Submit a minimum of 1 resource to the community per year

-Complete an end-of-the-year survey

5-Recertification

The certification exams are valid for 18 months and the trainer status must be renewed every 12 months.

Google for Education Certified Innovator
Designed for education thought-leaders who create new and innovative projects using Google for Education tools. Candidates for the Google for Education Certified Innovator program are selected based on their professional experience, their passion for teaching and learning, their innovative use of technology in school settings and their potential impact on other educators.

-Must pass the Google Certified Educator Level 2

-Must attend a Google for Education Innovation Academy as the first step in becoming a Certified Innovator.

-Applications will open and close on a rolling basis and will be based on location.

-Application Details To Be Announced
