If you’re applying now, you’re too late! The deadline has passed.
I pledge to sponsor a PyLady from a developing country to give her the chance to attend PyCon 2014 in Montreal. The minimum amount of sponsorship I will provide is $3,001. I will provide additional funding if the flight from the PyLady's location to Montreal is particularly expensive or if funding is required to attain a travel visa.
An example breakdown of the expected costs is provided below.
However, the selected PyLady is free to allocate the money in other ways. If you’d rather stay fewer nights, you could use the freed money to attend another tutorial. If you find another PyCon attendee to room with, you can use the extra money for other purposes.
If you are a PyLady from a developing country and you want to be considered for sponsorship, please send an email with your application to sf@pyladies.com explaining how you meet the two sponsorship criteria.
Please include your planned travel dates, home airport, and if you require help to acquire a Canadian or US visa (the latter might be required in case of layovers in the US on the way to Canada). A breakdown of your expected expenses is appreciated too.
The deadline for applications is Friday January 10th, 2014 23:59 PST.
As this sponsorship is intended to go to women who would not usually be able to attend PyCon, please do not apply if you have other means of attending.
All payments and travel planning are handled by the PyLadies organization.
As I'm neither a PyCon attendee nor part of the Python community, I don't really get anything out of this. In fact, I will most likely never meet the selected PyLady. I am doing this because I believe in the goals of the PyLadies organization and I prefer sponsoring people from developing countries who would otherwise not be able to attend PyCon.
The biggest donation PyLadies ever received was a corporate donation of $3,000. I want to raise attention to this fact. If a random guy from San Francisco can donate more to support arguably the best non-profit organization to support women in software engineering, corporations with much deeper pockets can do more to support women in the Python community.
In addition to the $3,001 I donated, I have also asked my employer to match my donation. The expected additional donation of $3,001 will go to the general pool of PyLadies grants.
