Editorial Note:

Simon Meller (1875–1949) was a noted art historian, responsible for initiating the Hungarian Museum of Fine Arts’ collection of drawings by Picasso. A famous double portrait by József Rippl-Rónai shows Elek Petrovics (another of de László’s correspondents) and Simon Meller side by side. Meller spent his last years in France and is buried in Père Lachaise cemetery, Paris. His daughter Katalin (Kató) and grandson Tamás (aged 9) did not leave Hungary: they were murdered by the Arrow Cross, the Hungarian Nazis, in 1944.
