[Translation]

Respected Maestro,

It was with great pleasure that I read your book “Painting a Portrait”,^[1] which has reached us here in Hungary. I would like to translate this work into Hungarian and am writing to ask for your valued consent in this regard. Should you grant it, I would make so bold as to send you the typescript of the translation, and ask you to be kind enough to share any comments you may have and perhaps to write a foreword – specifically for the Hungarian edition. This is the second book about the Maestro’s oeuvre that has come into my hands, the first being the 1913 volume by D. von Schleinitz.^[2] If there is anything else that I should be aware of, please let me know so that I can obtain it.

The above-mentioned book is, of course, superbly and ingeniously put together – the only pity is that it is a little short.

I moved back to Budapest last year, after a 10-year sojourn in Paris. During that time I wrote to you on two occasions asking you to take me on as a pupil, or to allow me to work alongside you, under your noble mentorship. I fear the lack of a response was a grievous blow to me.

I have thought about the matter a good deal since then and please believe me when I say that – even to someone to whom this is a matter of supreme indifference – they must surely still see how vitally important an idea it is that a Maestro, who is a supreme artistic phenomenon

of his day, should allow a few zealous pupils, those whom he deems worthy, to train according to his noble precepts. It is something that would primarily be in the public interest – but of course, the matter would have no relevance if the Master were in the smallest degree to be disturbed in the practice of his noble art by taking on such a quasi-professorial role.

I for my part would be happy to shoulder all the administrative tasks involved, and indeed offer my services to the Maestro in every capacity. I speak five languages – including English – well. If the Maestro were to stipulate any conditions, may I respectfully say in advance that I am happy to accept them.

Please forgive me for this request – which I repeat with trepidation. I would not have done so were it not for the fact that I needed to write to you on the matter of permission for the translation. But my behaviour is understandable and perhaps forgivable, in that it is prompted by the desire to live and develop alongside a source of such inestimably high artistry.

Mélyen tisztelt Mester!

Nagy élvezettel olvastam a Mesternek ide is eljutott művét „Painting a portrait”-t. Szeretném e művet magyarra lefordítani, és ehhez kérem a Mester magas beleegyezését. A gépírásos fordítást ez esetben bátorkodnék a Mesternek megküldeni, hogy esetleges észrevételét közölni kegyeskedjék és hogy esetleg egy – a magyar kiadásnak szánt előszót írjon. Ez a második könyv, ami a Mester munkásságáról a kezembe került, az első. D. von s Schleinitztől való 1913.ból. Ha még más is van, amit biztosra veszek, úgy kérem szíves értesítését, hogy beszerezhessem.

A fennt [sic] említett könyv persze kitűnően és szellemesen van összeállítva – kár, hogy kissé rövid.

Én még tavaly visszatelepedtem Pestre, 10 évi párisi tartózkodás után. Akkoriban, két ízben is fordultam a Mesterhez azon kéréssel, hogy vegyen fel tanítványának, vagy tegye lehetővé, hogy magas útmutatása mellett dolgozhassam, sajnos a válasz elmaradása nagy mértékben lesújtott.

A dolgon azóta is sokat gondolkoztam és méltóztasson elhinni, hogy – ha még absolut érdektelenül és nézné valaki a dolgot, akkor is rendkívül fontosnak és lényegesnek kellene tartsa a gondolatot, hogy egy Mester, aki korának páratlan művészeti

jelensége – egy nehány arra érdemesnek tartott buzgó tanítványnak engedje meg, hogy magunkat az Ő magas útmutatásai nyomán képezhessék. Ez úgy elsősorban közérdek is volna – persze a dolog rögtön nem aktualis, ha ezen quasi professori működés által a Mester a magas művészetének gyakorlásában a legcsekélyebb mértékben és zavartatnék.

Én a magam részéről az összes administrátiós teendőket készséggel válalnám [sic] és egyébbként [sic] is minden tekintetben felajánlanám szolgálataimat a Mesternek. Öt nyelvet – úgy az angolt is – jól beszélem. Ha a Mester bármilyen feltételeket szabna, azokat már előre is tisztelettel elfogadnám.

Ezen – félve megismételt kérésemért bocsánatot kérek, nem tettem volna, ha a fordítási engedélyért úgyis nem kellett volna a Mesterhez fordulnom. De érthető és talán megbocsájtható [sic] e lépésem, hogy egy ilyen páratlan nívójú művészet forrásánál szeretnék élni és fejlődni.
