Introduction:

(Audio Script: Image 1)

(Image 1 fade in)  In today’s teenage social life, it seems as if life gets harder everyday. So much to deal with: money and finance, school, family, and relationships. But one rarely thinks of psychiatric disorders.A huge part of society in teenagers today is fitting in. This is where huge problems occur, doing whatever needed to fit in. Whether it is doing drugs, playing sports, or wearing the right clothes. Eating disorders, along with depression, is a rising epidemic in this country and it can be due to “fitting in”.

According to Gonzalez, (2007) eating disorders amongst children and adolescents is on the rise. The struggle to maintain today's “image” and “healthy body weight” is what causes these terrible eating disorders. Typically, these disorders are seen more in teenage girls rather than boys.  According to Kreip, 10% of late adolescent and young adult females have symptoms of eating disorders.

A study also shows that there is a greater stress of eating disorders on people who have emphasis on being thin, such as models and athletes.

(Image 3 fade in) It’s important to understand that an eating disorder is more than just a skinny body. According to Hoek (n.d.) anorexia nervosa, one type of eating disorder, is considered to have the highest rate of mortality in all psychiatric disorders due to suicide and other physical complications.

(Image 4 fades in) A teenager suffering from these eating-disorders may fall into depression, may cause self-mutilation, or other harm to themselves or others. Aside from suicide, self-mutilation is a big affect on adolescents suffering from these disorders. There is no doubt that this is a huge issue alone.(Image 4 fades out)

(Image 5f ades in) Aside from the suicide or looking deathly ill, eating disorders can have different tolls on a person's body. Symptoms such as headaches, fine hair that grows on the body to keep the person warm, fainting, fine or hair loss, bruising easily, electrolyte imbalance, and hypothermia can be seen in a person with an eating disorder. According to Gonzalez (2007), sometimes these symptoms can lead to hospitalization for rehabilitation with fluid and electrolyte status to prevent refeeding syndrome. (Image 5 fade out)

Of course, when one doesn’t have proper nutrition in their bodies anything is bound to happen. Eating disorders affects the cardiovascular, metabolic, endocrine, renal, gastrointestinal and central nervous systems. These effects will be long term according to Hoek. (Image 6 fades out)

There really is no known cause for these eating disorders besides maybe the pressure of fitting in. It is important to understand that these disorders are mental and not choices. Typically, these disorders are sparked by depression and anxiety disorders. (Image  7 fades out)

Conclusion

(Image 8 fades in) It is important to get treatment because an eating disorder will not go away on its own. Only 1 in 10 suffering from eating disorder receive help. Unfortunetly, a study shows that about 5-10 % of those who suffer from eating disorders die within 10 years of having the disease. Visiting a doctor is crucial. According to Kreip, treatment should consist of psychological, medical, and nutritional components. Therapies such as cognitive based therapy and

nutritional counselling can be given.

Eating disorders are common in all age ranges, both sexes. If one feels that they suffer from eating disorders, it is important to understand that “You are not alone”. Superstars Paula Abdul, Elton John, and Mary-Kate Olsen are the few of many that have also suffered from eating disorders.
