Grade 6 - Ancient Egypt Sarcophagi

Design situation: It is ancient Egyptian times and someone has recently passed away (your choice of a pharaoh, female ruler, significant animal (pet) or an everyday Egyptian citizen. The new pharaoh had a particular liking to this figure and has demanded you to plan and construct a 3D sarcophagus in their honor.

Specifications for final design

The final product should include:

• hieroglyphics telling the figure’s name and position in society,

• inner drawings/symbols/designs that would be helpful to reach the afterlife (i.e.

drawings of abilities like cooking, a map of the underworld to navigate their way),

• any objects (i.e., jewelry, canopic jars) that may have been placed inside the case

to represent possessions needed for the afterlife that the person/animal would

hope to reach.

Stage 2 - Developing Ideas

  1. In your sketchbook, create at least 2 different drawings of what you think your sarcophagus will look like and how you want it to appear when made.

Remember to add the date to your drawings (so you can look back later) and consider what you might draw/put inside the sarcophagus. You should consider drawing your sarcophagus from different views (inside, outside, etc.). Your drawings should have clear labels and notes highlighting the key features. Someone should be able to use your drawing as a plan to build what you are designing.

  1. Choose your best design and describe the key features included. For example, “To honor my Pharaoh I have decided to put some gold in his sarcophagus as a show of respect.”
