Making Models of Mitosis

Summative Assessment

In this investigation you will make a 3D model to illustrate mitosis. The models will be based on pictures and descriptions of mitosis you have seen throughout class and in your textbook.

Materials:

Colored construction paper

Colored yarn

Markers

Glue or Tape

Scissors

Six, 3 x 5 note cards

Directions:

  1. Be sure you place your name and hour on all six of your note cards.
  2. In your model use yarn to represent the chromosomes.
  3. Use construction paper and markers to represent the cell and the cell membrane.
  4. Take your diagram (construction paper with yarn) and glue it to the 3 x 5 notecard.
  5. On every card be sure to label the cell membrane, cytoplasm, and chromosomes.
  6. Make these three dimensional models of each stage of mitosis. There are six stages of mitosis.
  7. Once you have made the six stages of mitosis on the 3 x 5 note cards with construction paper, yarn, and markers, you must also write a description about the stage of mitosis that is occuring on your note card. Be sure to write in complete sentences.
