NATIVE AMERICAN MUSIC
This week we began the study of Native American Music and you will notice that your Music at Home 40 features a drum activity. Drums and Vocalization are central to Native American music. In fact, it has been said that the drum is the heartbeat of the Native American people and Mother Earth and is the means of communication with "the creator." There are a number of different kinds of drums used by Native Americans. Perhaps the most familiar is the Pow Wow Drum often seen at gatherings and tribal fairs.

We introduced "METER" as well this week: both the "4 beat" and "3 beat" meters. What does "meter" mean? Meter is a grouping of beats within a "measure" (distance between the bar lines) The 1st beat of the measure (the "downbeat") is the strongest beat. We marched tonight to the "4-beat meter" by counting 1(loud stomp)-2-3-4(tiptoeing on 2-4), repeating this pattern over and over. Then we changed to a "3 beat meter" 1(loud stomp)-2-3(tiptoe 2&3). We pretended to be Native Americans around a ceremonial fire while singing Land of the Silver Birch.
HALLOWEEN DRESS-UP
It’s dress-up for Halloween time! Monday, October 24-Friday, October 28.
Feel free to bring Halloween snacks for post-class fun in Fellowship Hall.
We do have some kiddos with food allergies. Please check with your class before bringing a treat in.

1) Enjoy Music At Home Card 40:
- Be sure to create the "4 Meter" drumming pattern & bring to your next class! We will hang them on the wall and use during class.
- Design your drum rhythm pattern utilizing your NOTE TOTE and new METER CARD. Then transfer the rhythm to the Activity Page. Reminder: Only write on Activity Page 9 - Keep your BLUE METER CARD for use with NOTE TOTES only.
Suggestion: Perhaps you can find a place where your child can leave his/her glockenspiel set up all week long?
2) Be a Note Tote Rhythm Detective
- Write a 4-beat rhythm, but omit one of the rhythm symbols.
- Say “1-2-Find the Missing Rhythm” and then clap the rhythm (don’t speak)
- Child completes the rhythm.
- Clap and Read the rhythm together.
- Repeat: switching roles (child writes/parent completes)
3) Play the Note-Hunt Game
- Hide your NOTE CARDS
- Stroll around the house and sing Merrily We Roll Along
- Stop singing and shout out a “note name” for them to find.
