Get ready for an incredible summer in the heart of New York City! We are absolutely thrilled to welcome you to our 11th summer of sharing our passion for all things musical theater. It's truly inspiring to have performers from across the globe join us once again, united by our love for the stage.

It is very important to read the entire welcome email as it contains important information concerning your time at Joffrey Ballet School. The welcome email will contain the following information:

There will be a virtual orientation for students and parents as well as an in person orientation on the first day of classes.

SCHEDULES

Schedules will be posted on the website and emailed no later than Monday June 2, 2025. JBS will hold regularly scheduled classes on July 4th for this intensive.

GROUP ASSIGNMENTS

Group assignments will be posted on the website and emailed no later than Monday June 2, 2025.

BAND

Each student will receive an invitation in their Welcome email to join a Band Group. Band is a communication application that Joffrey Ballet School will use to post information, schedules, updates and events. Students and staff members can also use the messaging feature to communicate with each other.

CLASS ATTIRE & WHAT TO BRING

Joffrey Ballet School is committed to providing an inclusive environment for all students. Gender nonconforming students, students with religious and cultural considerations and any student needing additional support is welcome to contact us to discuss the dress code. Please contact our Customer Support department with any dress code questions and/or concerns.

Attire Guidelines

Wear clothing that allows for a full range of motion while maintaining a professional appearance. Your attire should enable instructors to observe your body alignment and technique clearly while showcasing your personality.

Daily Class Wear

  • Form-fitting athletic or dance wear
  • Leotards, unitards, or fitted tops with dance shorts or leggings
  • No baggy clothing or loose-fitting items
  • Avoid street clothes, jeans, or casual everyday wear

Footwear Requirements

  • Bring a shoe bag with multiple options:
  • Ballet shoes (soft leather or canvas)
  • Jazz shoes (slip-on or lace-up)
  • Tap shoes (with sound-producing metal taps)
  • Heels (LaDuca style musical theater heel)

“Best Black” Outfit

  • Prepare a polished, all-black ensemble for end-of-week showcases
  • Choose attire that makes you feel confident and stage-ready
  • Ensure the outfit is neat, tidy, and suitable for performance

Supplies required for all dancers:

  • Come prepared with an audition cut of music for use in various classes.

Additional Notes

  • Wear appropriate undergarments that provide support during movement
  • Bring extra hair ties, bobby pins, and headbands to keep hair secure

WHAT NOT TO BRING

  • Alcohol, drugs, tobacco, eCigarettes, Juuls, Hookah pipes, bongs and illegal substances of any nature, or drug and alcohol paraphernalia.
  • Any product that contains nuts.

BROADWAY SHOW ASSIGNMENTS

For weeks 1-4 students will be assigned to a Broadway musical each week. Week 5 will include an MJ: The Musical masterclass. Show assignments will be sent out by June 2. Students will not be allowed to request specific shows and those attending multiple weeks will be assigned to a different musical each week.

The Joffrey Ballet School invites all families and guests to join us in celebrating the hard work and dedication of our students as they showcase their growth in a culminating theater performance each week. The final week's performance will be the 3rd annual Joffrey Musical Theater’s Got Talent - a live evening where students will perform and compete in all things musical theater.

Throughout the Summer 2025 season, the Joffrey Ballet School marketing team and interns will capture photo and video content inside the studios. These images are used for promotional and archival purposes across our digital platforms including social media, email campaigns, and our website.

Joffrey Ballet School will share select photos with students and families every Friday, beginning in June, through a continuously updated photo album accessible throughout the summer. This weekly highlight aims to give families a glimpse into our training environment and student progress. Students and families are welcome to use the shared photos for personal and social media use. Please tag @joffreyschool when posting — and note that no edits or alterations to the photos are permitted.

While Joffrey Ballet School will make every effort to capture a broad representation of students, it is not guaranteed that all students will be photographed or appear in published materials. Please note that theater performance and studio showing photos will not be included.

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

Attendance

If a student will be late or absent, they should use BAND to communicate this to the staff on-site. If you are experiencing issues with BAND, you may also communicate tardiness or absences to Joffrey Ballet School NYC Admin.

Please include the following information in your message:

  • Name of the intensive your student is enrolled in
  • Dancer's full name (first, last)
  • Dancer's current Group assignment
  • Date of tardiness or absence
  • Specific details regarding your dancer (any classes the student will miss ie: morning/afternoon/entire day)
  • Parent name (first, last) and contact information (in the event that we need to reach out to you)

Lunch Breaks

  • Students 13 and younger are not allowed to leave a Joffrey Ballet School building without a staff member.
  • Students 14 and older are allowed to leave the building during lunch breaks, but must travel with other students who are also 14 and older.
  • Students 13 and younger will not be allowed to leave the building with students 14 and older.
  • Parents are welcome to drop off meals for their students at the studio.

There will be no chaperoned trips during lunch breaks to/from the studios. Students must pack a lunch and snacks to eat between meals.

Studio Lunch Plan

Joffrey Ballet School offers an optional studio lunch plan for housing and commuter students. We are very excited to announce Butter Beans Kitchen as the new vendor for the optional lunch plan in New York City. Lunch will be delivered to the studios Monday - Friday. Please note that housing students who signed up for the housing meal plan at the dorm will only receive breakfast and dinner. We do not recommend the studio lunch plan for students who have dietary restrictions or specific food preferences.

Due to severe food allergies, dancers are not permitted to pack anything with nuts in their lunch.

Guests & Visitors

No parents, guardians or visitors are allowed to be in the building. All students must be dropped off outside, in front of the building entrance.

Operational Activity at the Studios

  • Always wear your nametag on the front of your leotard or shirt.
  • Cell phones should be turned off and put away during class.

Meetings

Students are required to attend orientation prior to their arrival at the program. They do not need to attend orientation for each week they are in the program.

Fire Escapes, Rooftops, Balconies & Ledges

Students are strictly forbidden to be on the roof, fire escapes, balconies or building ledges at any time for any reason, except by the request of a Fire Official or in case of a true emergency.

Signage

Affixing any signs, flags or banners anywhere is prohibited.

Vandalism & Theft

Theft, willful destruction or damage/misuse of any property owned by any member of the community is prohibited.

Bullying & Harassment

Students at JBS are expected to treat each other with kindness, respect, and sensitivity. Harassment and bullying are not tolerated at JBS. Harassment is defined as aggressive pressure and/or continued unwanted comments that have a psychologically damaging effect and create an intimidating, humiliating, hostile or offensive environment. Bullying is defined as a person who uses strength or power, either verbal or physical, to intimidate others. Bullying is any word(s) (verbal or written), gesture, or action that makes people feel vulnerable, upset, humiliated, undermined, or threatened. If you find yourself being harassed or bullied at JBS, the first step is to communicate clearly to the individual that you find it offensive and that you expect the behavior/words to cease immediately. If the individual does not stop, report the matter to a staff member.

Weapons policy

Firearms and other weapons are prohibited. Any device that has the appearance and/or function of a serviceable weapon is prohibited.

Tobacco/Cigarettes/Juuls

Purchase, possession, transfer or use of tobacco (all forms) is strictly prohibited. This includes the use of electronic cigarettes, Juuls, vapes, or similar devices.

Alcohol

JBS has dry buildings, even for those individuals 21 and over. No alcohol allowed.

Illegal Drugs & substances

Purchase, possession, use, evidence of use, transfer or sale of drugs, or any drug related paraphernalia, including but not limited to marijuana, cocaine, narcotics, LSD, amphetamines or other illegal, un-prescribed drugs or controlled substances is not allowed. Associating with others while they are involved with illegal drugs or substances will be considered a violation. Drugs that are not listed will fall under this policy.

Compliance with Joffrey personal

Students are expected to fully comply with requests and directives given by JBS personnel, including directors, coordinators, instructors and staff. This includes requests for attendance at meetings, preferred behavior, and other community community etiquette. Failure to comply with JBS personnel is considered a display of disobedience or disrespect and may result in disciplinary action. Students are expected to be cooperative and truthful during interactions with staff, particularly during an investigation of an incident. Dishonest or uncooperative student behavior during an investigation will result in consequences.

MEDICAL INSTANCES

  • For all medical instances, students should alert the Artistic Director, Director of Health & Wellness and Administrative staff to determine if they should go to class, if they need to stay home and/or if they need to go to the doctor/hospital/therapy.
  • JBS staff will not be able to chaperone commuter students to the doctor.
  • Injuries: Please notify your instructor or an Administrative Assistant immediately if you are injured. If using ice, you must warm up for 45 minutes before starting to dance again.
  • Medical Emergencies: Per the medical waiver signed prior to arrival - in the event of an emergency medical situation, the appropriate emergency medical services will be notified immediately. Parents will be notified when the student is stable and in the care of medical professionals.
