Understanding copyright for digital media

At the end of the session, participants will have/be able to:

The internet and other electronic resources offer a tremendous amount and variety of information for academic, professional and personal use. Often, using internet resources, especially digital media (images, video, audio) can enhance projects as well as offer an alternative means for expression. Whilst the use of information found on the internet can be beneficial, it is imperative that those using the information are able to recognise how to do so appropriately, fairly and legally. The internet provides an endless supply of digital media items that could be used to enhance your work, however, there are particular licensing provisions, laws and guidelines you must know and understand before using them.  This session will introduce Creative Commons licensing, as well as review some of the basic principles of abiding copyright law when using electronic resources to help participants enhance their work whilst using media fairly.

Using Refworks for resource management

At the end of the session, participants will have/be able to:

Trying to make sense of your reference?  Wondering whether there is a more organised way of collecting and saving your references to complete a bibliography?  Refworks can help you manage your references and will save you time!  This course will introduce you to Refworks and help you with adding, organising and managing your research and generate a bibliography using the tool.

This 1.5 hour workshop is intended to encourage participants to use the Refworks tool and, on completion, understand the benefits of using a reference management tool, the importance of keeping accurate records of references used for assignments and raising awareness of the necessity of developing a basic understanding of the reference styles used.

Designing and creating your presentation: using Prezi

At the end of the session, participants will have/be able to:

At some point in your academic or professional career, you will be expected to plan, create and deliver a presentation.  If you are looking for an alternative to Microsoft PowerPoint or just want to try something new, Prezi is an interesting and easy-to-use visual presentation tool that can be shared online and made available in PDF format.   With features including zooming and multiple pathway organisation, Prezi offers a  visual experience beyond the features of PowerPoint.  This session will support participants in creating an account and developing a Prezi presentation, including tips for using templates, colour themes and other visual characteristics as well as guidance for structuring an informative and memorable presentation.
