Course Description

This course studies the rich literary production of the 20th century from Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Colombia, Peru, and Mexico. The student will obtain a general overview of Latin American literature from the 16th to the 20th century and will read representative works from the different time periods and genres.

Program

• Literature of the centuries: 16th, 17th, 18th
• Baroque and its characteristics
• Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Sta. Rosa de Lima, Gracilazo el Inca and Juan Ruiz de Alarcón
• Literature from the 19th century
• Romanticism, realism, and modernism; their characteristics and main authors
• Literature from the 20th century
• Narrative of the Mexican Revolution
• Contemporaries and surrealists: Juan Rulfo, Jorge Luis Borges, Fco. Rojas González, Antonieta Rivas Mercado, Pablo Neruda, etc.
• The Real Maravilloso, or Magical Realism, characteristics and representatives: Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Benedetti, Julio Cortázar, Elena Garro, etc.
• Literature of the wave (literatura de la onda), the mini-short story, urban literature. Characteristics and representatives: José Agustín, Marco Deneví, Isabel Allende, Augusto Monterroso, etc.

• Reading comprehension: 40%
• Oral production: 40%
• Written production and assignments: 20%
