Call to Action

Join us in calling for democracy and transparency at Oberlin

We, the undersigned, are alumni and other members of the Oberlin community who are concerned about the college we love. We chose to attend Oberlin because we believed in its distinctive history and mission, including its enduring commitment to racial, economic, and social justice, its innovative experiments in cooperative living, its highly engaged faculty, its world-class music education, and its abiding tradition of student activism. No matter what drew us to Oberlin, we knew that it was unique among American liberal arts colleges.

But recent actions by the Administration and Board of Trustees (BOT) indicate that Oberlin is forsaking its most fundamental values and is headed in the wrong direction. Since Alumni for Oberlin Values was established, hundreds of alumni have shared their concerns, as well as their disappointment when those concerns are ignored by the Administration and BOT. Many examples are included below.

We therefore call on the Board of Trustees to demonstrate a current commitment to fairness, democracy, and transparency by taking the following first steps (described in more detail below):

  1. Make Oberlin more financially accessible.
  2. Establish open and democratic elections for alumni-elected trustee candidates.
  3. Ensure financial transparency for Oberlin’s spending and investments.

Recent Actions Contrary to Core Values

Here are ten examples of recent actions by the Administration and BOT as well as our vision of how Oberlin should act to be consistent with its core values.

  • Core value: Oberlin should be a leader in providing educational opportunity to students from low-income backgrounds.
  • Core value: Oberlin should return to a transparent and accountable model of investment which protects Oberlin’s financial position without compromising its principles.
  • Core value: Oberlin should appreciate its employees, especially those who are long-term and economically vulnerable, and negotiate in good faith with the unions that represent them.
  • Core value: Oberlin should recognize that the quality of its students' education depends on the recruitment and retention of excellent faculty members.
  • Core value: Oberlin should recognize that its co-ops offer a unique experience of community, “Learning and Labor,” and self-governance that needs to be preserved and strengthened.
  • Eliminating the provision of the College's bylaws that "entrusted" faculty "with the management of the internal affairs of the College"
  • Core value:  Oberlin should respect the faculty's rightful role in Oberlin's governance, including but not restricted to its academic program.
  • Outsourcing campus health services to a Catholic health care provider that restricted contraceptive resources as well as services for transgender students, and, after reversing course, refused to take responsibility or release the contract the College signed with the provider
  • Core value: Oberlin should prioritize providing services in-house and avoid entities that restrict access to services important to any segment of its students.
  • Core value: Oberlin should adopt a model of governance in which alumni select their representatives democratically and ensure that they are independent of control by the Administration.
  • Core value: Oberlin leadership should approach its interactions with members of the College community with humility, rather than arrogance, and move quickly and competently to resolve disputes fairly and effectively before they spiral out of control.
  • Core value: Oberlin should consult with alumni before it unilaterally makes a significant change to a long-standing and cherished tradition directly impacting them.

 Alumni Are Being Ignored

Over the course of the past five years, several groups of Oberlin alumni have contacted the Oberlin Board of Trustees (BOT) and Administration to express their concern and ask Oberlin to alter its actions. Oberlin’s current leadership has ignored or dismissed these attempts by College alumni to constructively engage on these issues. Examples include the following:

  • In February 2020, more than 2300 alumni signed a petition asking Oberlin leadership to reconsider its plan to outsource the union jobs. Despite this petition and subsequent correspondence between groups of alumni and the BOT, by July, Oberlin had outsourced the jobs.
  • By September 2023, over 1100 alumni concerned about the future of Oberlin co-ops joined OSCAlums. When the organization’s leaders have attempted to engage with members of the Oberlin Administration, their concerns have been dismissed.
  • In October 2023, the steering committee of Alumni for Oberlin Values sent the BOT a letter explaining multiple concerns and asking for several specific actions. In response, AOV received a letter in December 2023 from Oberlin’s General Counsel stating that the BOT “will not be able to respond to” the issues raised (other than suggesting that AOV should assume responsibility for remedying Oberlin’s failure to enroll low-income students).
  • In April 2024, Alumni for Oberlin Values asked the Oberlin Administration and BOT for assistance in contacting the two candidates that the Alumni Leadership Council selected for the alumni-elected trustee positions to attend a virtual town hall. AOV’s request was refused, so the town hall could not go forward.
  • As of today, over 1400 alumni have signed a petition objecting to the move of class reunions to the fall. Last year, the main organizer of the petition arranged a call with an Oberlin Vice-President, who said the change was non-negotiable.

The Board of Trustees Must Act

We refuse to remain indifferent as we watch Oberlin abandon its unique history and values. We need to see some sign that the Board of Trustees is committed to a path forward that is consistent with Oberlin’s fundamental values. We call on the BOT to make a public commitment to take the following concrete steps by the end of the 2024-25 academic year:

  1. Make Oberlin more financially accessible by adopting a five-year plan to enroll a higher percentage of students from the lowest-income families (Pell Grant recipients).
  2. Establish open and democratic elections for alumni trustee candidates so that an alum who chooses to do so can run by acquiring signatures, and without prior vetting and approval by college officers.
  3. Ensure financial transparency for Oberlin’s spending and investments and prevent conflicts of interest, including written guidelines which provide for full disclosure of all holdings, contracts, and administrative fees for funds held in Oberlin’s endowment.

Join us. Add your name and ask others in the Oberlin community to do the same.
