Dear President Father Paul Fitzgerald,
We, the undersigned alumni, pen this collective letter to express profound disappointment in the University of San Francisco’s lack of empathy and concern regarding the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Beyond witnessing one-sided or noncommital statements emanating directly from administrative offices, we’ve observed a hypocritical stance regarding the safety of pro-Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim students versus the protections offered to other students. In addition, we are disappointed in USF’s hollow message of “changing the world from here”, hollow because the university openly condemns and punishes students who support ending the genocide in Gaza and does not divest from companies responsible for aiding and supporting the ongoing violence in Gaza.
The inadequate security measures for Palestinian, Muslim, Arab, and Pro-Palestinian students have become evident, exemplified by a statement from you, Father Fitzgerald, condemning and conflating anti-Israeli sentiments with anti-semitism, stating that “These posts do not represent USF’s position, views, or values; on the contrary, they stand in stark contrast to our commitment to nonviolence, social justice, and the peaceful co-existence of all peoples and communities.” You offer support to students who felt unsafe due to “anti-Semitic posts” but did not offer the same level of counseling or resources to students who felt unsafe due to anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, and anti-Palestinian sentiments.
We are also concerned with the growing number of universities and colleges around the country calling riot police and other law enforcement agencies on unarmed college students, that our students are not safe from your administration. We demand the guaranteed safety of our students from police brutality, and administrative retaliation, and the protection of their First Amendment rights to free speech and peaceful assembly. Regrettably, the administration's inability to take a stand against injustices and the increased xenophobia against Muslim and Arab students, especially concerning the Palestinian cause, has severely marred our perception of our alma mater.
We as alumni promise to withhold our donations and support which includes networking events, volunteering, and other support to the University until the following demands are met:
1. Ensuring the safety and protection of our students' rights to protest and peacefully assemble without fear of police brutality and administrative retaliation: Growing anti-Palestinian, anti-Muslim, and anti-Arab’s across the county, especially in reference to what occurred on May 1st, 2024 at UCLA’s student encampment and at Columbia University are appalling. We are asking that the administration respects the students rights to peacefully assemble and to not call riot police on our students.
2. A public acknowledgment of the suffering of the Palestinian people: We firmly reject any statement that fails to acknowledge the suffering of the Palestinian people and their right to a free state. We call on the University of San Francisco’s President Father Paul Fitzgerald to condemn the actions of Netanyahu and his extremist regime and to acknowledge that Israel has massacred many thousands of Palestinians in Gaza, including over 15,000 children.
3. Disclose USF investments: The university must release a full list of the companies that it invests in and any ties they may have to the state of Israel. The university must vow to make these investments transparent and accessible for all student, alumni, and donor networks and look to reevaluate their investments.
4. Divest USF from Israeli settler colonialism and apartheid: The administration must endorse the Palestinian-led call for Boycott Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel. The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement is a Palestinian-led global movement that aims to end international support for Israeli violations of international law by forcing companies, institutions and governments to change their policies. BDS calls for the end of Israeli occupation, decolonization of Palestine, dismantling of the Wall, recognition of the fundamental rights of Palestinian citizens of Occupied Palestinian Territories, and the full right of return of Palestinian refugees.
5. Protection for all students: We insist that the USF administration adhere to USF's non-discrimination policies and all applicable federal, state and city laws, ensuring the protection of every student, including those with Palestinian, Arab, Muslim, and Indigenous backgrounds. We demand an explicit pledge from the administration to defend all students and faculty members who speak out against genocide and settler colonialism from the US to Palestine and against racism, oppression, and dispossession here and across the globe. The administration must defend its students from racist and zionist attacks, defamation and doxxing by speaking out in support of students as well as providing the resources to students to protect themselves.
If our demands remain unaddressed
- We collectively commit to refraining from contributing financial support to USF. As dedicated alumni, we recognize the crucial role alumni play in sustaining and enhancing this institution. Despite this, we vow to withhold donations specifically from USF indefinitely.
- As accomplished individuals in various fields such as law, medicine, engineering, activism, and more, we will consciously omit any mention of the University of San Francisco from our achievements and future accomplishments. Our achievements speak for themselves, and we choose not to associate them with an institution complicit in genocide..
- We will abstain from participating in events that highlight the accomplishments of USF graduates during orientations or any professional events for that matter, and bar the use of our accomplishments to bolster USF’s reputation.
- As a substantial part of USF's diverse community, we will also distance ourselves from any Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives the university holds to organize in our names.
As USF alumni we condemn the actions/inactions of the USF’s administration that have refused to properly and adequately protect its student body. We request immediate action and response to this letter.
