Getting Started in HMH
How to Determine Whether to Place Students in System 44 or Read 180
- Reading Inventory all students
- If Lexile is above 500, straight Read 180
- If Lexile is below 500, test Phonics Inventory
- If score is Advancing, put in Read 180 (this means they know phonics)
- If score is anything else, put in System 44
Enroll Students in System 44 or Read 180 AND Assign Reading Inventory and Phonics Inventory
- Roster
- Manage student enrollment
- Click checkboxes for what they need (must unclick to re-assign)
- Read 180 B (middle school)
- System 44 B (middle school)
(If a box won’t check, uncheck and re-check. If that doesn’t work, email Tippie; it means we are out of licenses.)

Rotation Schedule Ideas for Block Schedules
Priester’s Schedule
Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday |
Whole Group Rotation | Rotation Rotation | Whole Group Rotation | Rotation Rotation | Step Up to Writing |
(Priester uses this because she found that students took a few minutes to login in and settle into each station. It gives 25-30 minutes per station with calm transitions. It also creates a window of time for a reader’s workshop (silent reading) of non-Read 180 books at the beginning of class and time for a brief daily class community circle.)

Rosetta Stone Integration
- If possible, put newcomers who use Rosetta Stone in one group, such as Group C
- During Independent Reading station, have them use Rosetta Stone instead
- Expect them to participate in whole group Read 180 lessons and small group System 44 lessons (scaffold as much as possible)
Miscellaneous
Books
- Read 180 and System 44 have different libraries. If you move a student from one program to the other, they will will no longer be able to continue reading books in the other system.
- If you use paper books, keep the Read 180 and System 44 books separate. Students can only access book quizzes for book within their program’s library.
- Most of the physical books have the Lexile number printed on the back cover. For the ones that do not, you can just google their Lexiles and label them with a Sharpie.
- More books are available in the digital library than the physical library.
- For some reason, few books are available around certain Lexile levels, such as 500.
Logistics
- If the students struggle to move from station to station, assign their seats in groups and move to them instead of having them move
- When leading small groups, sit with your back to a wall/corner and have the students working at the Independent Reading and Student Application stations angle their desks so you can see all screens
- Ask students to bring their own headphones
- Post a list of needed supplies by group on the board at the beginning of class
Expectations
- Priester and Rawlings found that using time on task to grade students does not lead to an increase in application use. Many students just sat and listened to music instead of putting in effort to complete topics and segments, especially when they were required to speak into the microphone.
Newcomers
- Put newcomers in one group. Do System 44 for student application. Use newcomer lessons for small group.
- Resources
Random
- If a student’s Chromebook is in Spanish, the Reading Inventory questions and text will be in Spanish. To fix this, go to Remove a Reading Inventory Test Score and delete the score. Then, have the student retake the test using a Chromebook browser that is in English.
- If a student accidentally takes a Reading Inventory outside of the testing window, Remove a Reading Inventory Test Score.
- To get higher Reading Inventory Score, give assessment in 20 minute time chunks. Be sure that students log out and SAVE their scores.
- If students complain that they just did something yesterday, they probably didn’t log off or they didn’t finish the activity/page they are on .
- Students must SAVE and logout everyday. Give two minutes for them to log off.
