Return to St. Mary Home Page

The mission of the music ministry at St. Mary’s is to enhance the prayer of God’s people through sacred music. We strive to provide the very best we can offer at all parish liturgies through the use of our time and talent.

St. Augustine is quoted as saying, “One who sings prays twice.” From biblical times music has been used to raise our praise, thanks, laments, prayers, and supplications to Almighty God.  The beautiful melodies of times past and present that accompany and surround these words serve as the vehicle to bring them to our heavenly Father, bringing His people closer to Him and to one another.

Choir: The St. Mary’s Choir is open to all adults and mature teenagers who wish to serve God through the gift of their singing voice. Rehearsals are held weekly on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the Choir Room across from the Parish Hall. The Choir sings weekly (except for first Sundays) at the 10:00 a.m. Sunday Mass as well as Christmas, the principal liturgies of Holy Week, and other holy day and sacramental celebrations.

Bells of St. Mary’s: The Bells of St. Mary’s is an instrumental ensemble that makes music and enhances our liturgies through the ringing of English handbells. Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. in the Choir Room. The bells ring on the first Sunday of the month at the 10:00 a.m. Mass, as well Christmas, Easter, and other special celebrations.

Cantors: Cantors are called upon to help lead congregational singing. Their primary duties are to proclaim in song the Responsorial Psalm and Alleluia/Gospel Acclamation verses and, as necessary, sing in dialogue with the congregation at other moments in the liturgy. The ministry of cantor is open by audition only. Training is provided.

In addition to the regular music ministry opportunities above, at present Children’s Choirs and Young Adult Ensembles are specially formed during Advent in preparation for Christmas Eve Masses as well as during Lent to prepare for Easter Sunday, Confirmation, and First Holy Communion Masses. Invitations to join these choirs are published in the bulletin and distributed to students in St. Mary’s Faith Formation classes and Youth Groups as these times approach.
