Canada Regional Organizer

About the Canada Regional Organizer position

We’re looking for an experienced campaigner to help mobilize 350.org tar sands campaigns. This person will be the Canadian coordinator of 350.orgs tar sands campaign, committed to empowering others and helping to build a grassroots movement that will oppose the reckless expansion of tar sands mining and distribution of tar sands oil.

About 350.org

350.org is building a global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis. Our online campaigns, grassroots organizing, and mass public actions are led from the bottom up by thousands of volunteer organizers in over 188 countries. 350.org works hard to organize in a new way—everywhere at once, using online tools to facilitate strategic offline action. We want to be a laboratory for the best ways to strengthen the climate movement and catalyze transformation around the world.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with and support the work of existing tar sands campaign partners and allies in both the US and Canada.
  • Develop collaborations with new allies, especially outside of our usual networks, and with First Nations who have historically led this campaign.
  • Work closely with emerging 350.org groups in Canada, identifying local volunteer leaders and organisers and supporting these groups to play stronger roles in this campaign.
  • Look for opportunities to employ 350.org style strategies and tactics in this campaign to apply pressure against industry and government plans to expand tar sands mining and distribtuion, especially considering the use of creativity, direct action and civil disobedience.
  • Create and run strategic campaigns and actions aimed at key Provincial and municipal targets.
  • Support Canadian divestment campaigns and partners and identify new strategies and tactics that directly target tar sands corporate players.
  • With training from 350.org's digital team, write emails, prepare web pages and social media content for 350.org's Canadian campaigns.

Required skills and experiences

  • 3-5 years of experience leading campaigns and organising within non-governmental organisations or grassroots networks.
  • Experience in building coalitions and making the most of the different approaches coalition members bring to the cause.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience in creating online and offline campaign support content.
  • Understanding the role of creativity, direct action and civil disobedience in campaigns.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and in close coordination with a team working remotely.

Desirable (but not required) skills and experiences

  • Understanding of the tar sands industry and related fossil fuel opposition campaigns.
  • Understanding of the Divestment campaign and familiarity with regional leaders.
  • Group coaching, training, and facilitation.
  • Online-to-offline strategy development.
