Movie Scoring Competition

Summary: Every contestant will be given the same roughly 30 - 60 second video clip. The goal is to write their song as a score to the clip, with mood changes and themes fitting with the elements of the video. After completion, they can either sync the audio over the video themselves, or I will do it for them. The competition will be graded on both aspects of musical quality, and correlation with the video.

Here’s the clip to write your score to: Movie Scoring Clip - YouTube

Submit your pieces here: https://forms.gle/hxJChcE2EXE5i93K6

Rules:

  1. Must be an original song
  2. Collaborations are allowed.
  3. Song duration must be within five seconds of the length of the video clip, in order to sync properly. If it is longer than that, when I sync it I will only use the audio from the beginning of the score until the video is done, and the rest will be cut off.
  4. If one of your submissions is a collaboration, you may also submit another piece. (You can submit up to two pieces if at least one is a collab)
  5. External audio sources can be used as long as flat sheet music is included. (But, you won’t get more points for having better audio samples.)
  6. You can’t use previously written pieces, but you can use past ideas as inspiration
  7. You can make your piece absolutely any genre at all, including lyrical, if you feel it fits the clip. You can have even brief moments of silence in your score if that’s what you feel works best.
  8. This will be due February 25th

Scoring:

The score will be out of 100 points, with two different categories and five total sections.

  1. Quality of the Piece: 50 Points
  • Originality: 10 Points
  • Flow: 10 Points
  • Overall Quality: 30 Points
  1. How Well the Piece Goes With the Clip: 50 Points
  • Overall Mood/Theme Portrayed: 25 Points
  • Specific Matching Elements: 25 Points

Total: 100 Points

Now I’ll explain more clearly what each of the sections means.

Originality: How original it is, meaning how much did you make it your own and how different is it from other pieces. (Chord progressions, articulations, melodies, etc.)

Flow: How continuous it is, and how smooth transitions are.

Overall Quality: Just overall how good it sounds.

Overall Mood/Theme Portrayed: How well the general tone of your piece fits the general tone of the clip. For example, if the clip was a romantic story and your piece is an epic fight scene theme, you wouldn’t get many points.

Specific Matching Elements: How your music matches to specific mood changes and elements in the clip. For example, if the clip was a rocket taking off, then you might have powerful strings come in at that moment, or a tempo change, and stuff like that.

Prizes:

Using the top three contestants' scores, I will post a video compilation of their pieces played over the video clip on my youtube channel. (If they give me permission)

1st Place: Premium Flat Subscription for one year! Plus, a collab with me.

2nd Place: Shoutouts on my next two pieces, and a free publish on my account.

3rd Place: Shoutout on my next piece, and I’ll follow you and listen to/like a few of your pieces.

Note* All prizes in lower ranks apply to upper ranks as well, and if the first place winner already has premium, their subscription will just be renewed for free when it runs out.

Due Date: February 25th
