My dear Marczi,

I received your long, kind letter today – I was delighted with what you wrote – it is so good to know that feel such warm – and true sympathy for my life’s work – No matter what talents we are blessed with – constant work – and the full devotion of our hearts and souls can lift us above the day-to-day – I was happy to hear – that your son is improving^[1] – and there is every hope of a full recovery – I am glad that you received all the parcels – I have just today received a thank you letter from Elza and Dezső – and from Szerén and Gyula^[2] – I am expecting a letter from Bárczy – I am sorry to hear that the exhibition is so bad, it pains me that one feels this unfortunate situation everywhere nowadays, the young don’t study, they aren’t serious – Plenty of them come here from Hungary – believing that things are easy here and that they can just follow my footsteps, but they soon go back – when I came here 27 years ago [in Marczi’s hand: “more 30”] – I had already made

my name in Europe – there is no place here for unknown heroes despite everything that happened during the war – to maintain one’s standing – and to rise higher – apart from ability – one must live a life of tenacious and constant slog – I have received so many honours in the last three months – I’ve never known anything like it – But it is as if it never happened, in the new year I must get on with my great work – It is a major artistic project^[3] – to achieve what I have dreamed of for so long – and one for which a certain youthful vigour is needed – I am terribly busy these days, finishing off various projects by the end of the year – and meanwhile greetings cards are pouring in from all over the world, to which I must reply – I hope that next year I’ll succeed in organising a draw for the gypsy dancer [6316] – I waiting daily for a reply from the Minister of Public Education – and from Petrovits,^[4] to whom I have written offering my Magdalena study [2932]. I received a nice letter of congratulation from Ballo^[5] but I imagine the others are looking at me with envy!

I haven’t received the Catalogue yet but I don’t expect precise answers from Pest – Siklóssy, the editor of the Pesti Hírlap is always approaching me,^[7] and sending in reproductions of my paintings and today in response to his wishes I sent a picture new works [sic] – I’m sorry that Seemann’s situation is serious – but I imagine that they prefer to give the job to younger Hungarians – Again, Bárczy's situation is difficult!! I’ve been writing all day today – and I am happy – that this year – tonight we will be united with our sons – and their wives – and the first grandchild. The angel on the Christmas tree will be the same one – which we bought for Henry in 1901 for his first Christmas tree – Miss Gerrard Little is with us too^[8] – and we will be thinking of you – My dear Lucy^[9] – has been very busy these past days – and is decorating the Christmas tree with a very happy heart, she won’t even let the secretary help her – We exchange some little presents – after 34 years Lucy has finally asked for a wristwatch – because she has refused to wear one until now. Much simpler than the ones we sent to the girls – I had the pleasure today – of paying my Bank the full £13,000

which the Bank paid for me at the beginning of this year, it is a huge tax – and I can’t do anything about it – but as I earned much less this year – the next tax bill will be less – and I don’t want to earn so much – there is no way to do so now – I enclose a small envelope with 300 – francs – stamped – and Szerén should give it to Aunt Anne – the poor woman deserves it; the reason I wrote the amount on the envelope is because she would think I sent more – I know the Pest mentality, it is dreadful. It will be easier for Szerén too – Is Adolf Goldreich still alive? As you can see – it was a great success in town – it was only a half length, but it went for £800 – we sat near the King – and there was great applause from the audience when my name was mentioned – This is great honour, Marczi – that in this huge country is only I who gets commissioned – [illegible] I got another nice letter from the Duke of Kent – thanking me for the sum of £725 raised by the exhibition,^[10] which was visited by 7,500 – people in 12 days – the portraits of the young royal couple are now on display in St James’s Palace [5928][5931] – along with the other wedding presents – on a stand. 1000 people go every day to see the gifts – the two portraits at the Queen’s request have been [loss]

keep your eye out for the Pesti Hírlap and send me a copy if they publish a photo or write about me – I’m surprised they didn’t write more about my Magdalena painting [2932] – which is a subtle study – Johny has just come in – tall and rangy – it's now 6 o’clock – and he wanted to be here in time for the Christmas tree – if only you could be here too – but I'll see you at the end of January for sure – We'll go to Naples, God willing – and to Amalfi

for 2 weeks and from there back via Cannes – both of us need to get completely away from our obligations here – but don’t tell anyone of this plan of ours – which must be well arranged for 2 days for my stay in Pest [sic]. I hope that you will be with the family – this evening – I must stop now – tell Szerén to pass on the envelope immediately –

ma vettem hosszú jóságos leveledet – tartalmának örvendtem – s jól esik hogy életem működésében oly meleg – igaz részvéttel vagy – Bármennyi tehetséggel is vagyunk megáldva állando munkássággal – s szívünk lelkünk teljes odadásával lehet kiemelkedni a minden napi életből – Jól esett hallanunk – hogy fiad javulóban van – s meg van minden remény a teljes egészség fejlődéséhez – örvendtem a küldemények kezedhez juttottak – Éppen ma kaptam köszönő levelet Elza es Dezsőéktől – valamint Szerén és Gyulától – Bárczytól is várok levelet – sajnálattal hallom hogy a kiállítás oly rossz –  fájdalom ezen szerencsétlen helyzet most mindenütt észlelhető a fiatalok nem tanulnak – nem komolyak – Többen jottek ide magyarországból – abban a hiszemben hogy itt a helyzet könnyű s az én utamon fognak haladni de hamarosan visszamennek – mikor én ide 27 évvel [in Marczi’s hand: több 30] ide jöttem – már meg volt az

Europai prestigem – ismeretlen hősöknek itt hely nincsen s mintannak daczára a mi a háború allatt történt – s megtartani a helyet – s magasabbra emelkedni – ahhoz a tudás mellett – szívos kitartó munkásság jelében kell élnie – Az utolsó három hónapban oly sok megtiszteltetés ért – melyhez hasonlot eddig nem élveztem – De mindez mintha nem történt volna az ujj év beállával [sic] kell hogy nagy munkáimhoz fogjak. – Teljesíteni mire hosszú évek után vágyom egy nagy művészi alkotásra – s mihez bizonyos fiatal erő is van szükség – E napokban rettenetesen vagyok elfoglalva hogy még ez évben fejezzem be különböző ügyeimet – a mellett most rengeteg üdvözlettek jönnek a világ minden részéből mire válaszolnom kell – Reméllem a jövő évben sikerül kisorsolni a szigány tanczosnőt – most naponta várok választ a közoktatási ministertől es – Petrovitstól is a kiknek írtam felajánltam a Magdalena tanulmányomat. Ballo–tól szép gratulatio levelet kaptam de képzelem hogy a többiek minő irigy szemmel kisérnek!

a Katalogust idáig nem kaptam nem igen várok Pestről pontos válaszokat – Siklóssy – a Pesti Hírlap szerkesztője allandoan ér hozzám és beküldi képeim reproducioit s ma kivánságához képet küldtem ujjabb munkákat – Sajnálom hogy Seemann helyzete komoly – de képzelem hogy inkább fiatalabb magyaroknak adják az állást – Ismét Bárczynak a helyzete nehéz!! Ma egész nap írok – s boldogít – hogy az idén – ma este együdt leszünk fiainkkal – feleségeikkel – s az első unokával. a karácsonyfán ugyanaz az angyal lesz – melyet Henrynek 1901 vettünk az első karácsony fajához – velünk van miss Gerrard Little is – s reátok fogunk gondolni – kedves Lucym– az utolsó napokban nagyon el van foglalva – s nagyon boldog szívvel rendezzi a karácsonyfát, még a titkárt sem engedi hogy segítsen – Egymásnak fogunk kis ajándékokat adni –s 34–ev után Lucy végre egy karórát kivánt – mert idáig nem akarta viselni. sokkal egyszerűbb mint azok melyeket a kis leányoknak küldtünk – ma az az öröm is ért – hogy befizettem Bankomnak a teljes 13.000 fontot.

melyet a Bank ez év elején részemre kifizetett óriási adó – s nem tehetek el semmit – de miután sokkal kevesebbet kerestem ez évben – [sokkal]  kevesebb lesz a jövő adó – s nem akarok már annyit keresni – mert nincsen esélye – mellékelve küldök egy kis borítékban 300 – francot – lepecsételve – s adja át Szerén az Anna néninek – szegény jó asszony megérdemli; azért írtam az összeget a borítékra mert azt képzelni hogy többet küldtem – fájdalom ismerem ezt a Pesti szellemet. s Szerénre nézve kellemesebb is lesz – vajjon Adolf Goldreich él e még? Amint látod – nagy volt a siker a városnál csak mellkép nagyságú –s 800 fontért vették meg . közel ültünk a királyhoz – s nagy volt a taps a közönség részéről, mikor a nevemet említették – nagy tisztelet ez marczi – ebben a nagy országban hogy csak engemet kértek fel – további kedves levelet kaptam a Kenti herczegtől – melyben megköszönte az összeget 725 £ a kiállítás részéről, melyet 7500 – ember látogatott meg 12. nap allatt – a fiatal herczegi pár arczképei most a St Jamesi palotában vannak kiállítva a többi nász ajándékok mellett egy álványon naponta 1000 – ember látogatja az ajándékokat – a két arczkép a királynő kivánságára lett –

figyeld a Pesti Hírlapot s küldjél ha írnak vagy képet hoznak rólam – csodálom hogy nem írtak többet a magdalena képemről – mely egy finoman átérzett tanulmány – E perczben jött be Johny – magas – nyulánk – éppen 6 óra van – s itt akart lenni kellő időben a karácsonyfára – bár te is lehetnél itt – de Január végével látjuk egymást biztosan. – Isten segítségével le megyünk napoly – s amalfi

2 hétre – s onnét Canne on át – vissza – mindkettőnknek nagy szükség van teljesen itteni kötelességeinktől távol lenni – de ne szólj ezen tervünkről – melyet jól kell 2 –napra Pesti tartózkodásunkra rendezni. Remélem hogy te a családdal – leszel ma este – már zárnom kell – mond Szerénnek adja át e boritékot azonnal –
