A Message from Principal La Rue Dear Parents and Students,
We had a wonderful Black History Month assembly on February 28, 2013. Students heard from a trio of professional musicians, our girls choir sang African American songs, and students made presentations. A big thanks to our Choir teacher, Ms. Jennifer Carini, for organizing this terrific event.
Our school was chosen to participate in the National Assessment for Educational Progress (NAEP), a nation-wide examination. Thirty eighth graders were randomly chosen to represent our state. We had 95% attendance for the NAEP test participation. Way to go Hawks!
CCMS will continue our Student of the Month Recognition. Every teacher will honor two students for their effort. Should your child get recognized, you will receive an invitation to attend the recognition. We will display photos and teacher blurbs on our bulletin board outside of the student window. Be sure to check it out!
We will also have Hawk Honor Roll Awards in May to recognize students for their academic excellence.
Many thanks to Luti Canosa (parent of 6th grader) and Irene Nguyen (parent of 8th grader) for contributing their time to decorate our Student of the Month and Honor Roll/Perfect Attendance bulletin.
Parents and Superintendent Kari McVeigh Meet
I would like to extend my gratitude to Lisa Rodriguez, one of our 6th grade parents, for organizing a conversational forum with Superintendent McVeigh on February 14, 2013. I also want to acknowledge the following parents for their ongoing support: Miguel Rodriguez, Melissa Havea, Melissa Asencio-Schmidt, Carlos Corral, Michelle Campos, Martha Guerra, Zuliana Esquivez, and Dora Lepe.
Superintendent McVeigh attentively and thoughtfully engaged in a robust informational dialogue with CCMS parents. Parents shared their concerns and recommendations for the improvement of CCMS. As a school, we are committed making sure the parent and community voice is heard, and that we respond to your concerns.
Some of the topics discussed included drugs, violence prevention, campus safety, teacher morale, programs that are no longer available and ideas for changes. I am working closely with Superintendent McVeigh to address your concerns. It is our priority that all students are safe while at school. We plan to be more proactive when instances of controlled substances and bullying are discovered on our campus. Any incidents that affect the safety of one student affects all students. We will have an update for you in three weeks and host a follow-up meeting on April 8, 2013 at 6:00pm in our Media Center.
Restorative Justice
We are currently training administration and some staff in Restorative Justice practices. We expect to begin the implementation of these processes and procedures in April. Restorative Justice (RJ) has been used in schools across the world to successfully build healthy school communities, support students and teachers, and address discipline issues. A number of schools in Districts near Union City practice Restorative Justice and are enjoying improved school climate and reduced disciplinary incidents. RJ is based in the belief that those affected by harm can work together to repair it’s impact and effects and that this collaboration leads to true accountability and more positive relationships. The goal of Restorative Justice is to practice restorative strategies with students rather than doing things to them or for them. More information about Restorative Justice and its impact on school climate will be sent home to all parents next week.
Thank you!
Mr. La Rue |

Academics: Teachers and students are exploring the many benefits of the Reading Apprenticeship program that is designed to help students engage and succeed in rigorous academic work. Students gain the skills to engage, problem solve, and persevere when faced with challenging academic texts. Instructional routines and approaches are based on four interacting dimensions that support reading development: social, personal, cognitive and knowledge building. These dimensions are woven into subject area teaching through conversations about the thinking processes students and teachers engage in as they read. Good readers have a “tool kit” of strategies for tackling difficult and challenging text. Revealing these strategies through shared classroom inquiries and discussions makes the reading process visible and accessible to all ability levels and helps prepare our students for college, workforce training and life.
In addition to Reading Apprenticeship, Sixth Grade Core classrooms have implemented the Critical Literacy approach to literacy development. The objective is to develop critical thinking through independent interpretation of literature, to develop language ability and precise vocabulary, to acquire content knowledge, and to engage the class in an exchange of ideas. Through the Critical Literacy seminars, students are encouraged to think deeply and conceptually in order to access and make meaning of fiction and non-fiction texts.

7th Grade STAR Writing Test 7th grade students will be taking the California Standards Writing Test on Tuesday, March 5th. Make-ups will be given on Wednesday, March 6th.
To prepare for this test we suggest: - Ensure your child has a good night of sleep to reduce pre-test anxieties.
- Make sure they have a good breakfast on the day of the test.
- Ensure your child arrives to school on time. Arriving late can make your child feel nervous or stressed before taking the test.
- Encourage your child to apply all the writing skills he or she has learned.
We look forward to seeing all of our 7th grade students next Tuesday! |
