Inclement Weather Asynchronous Days, 2022-23
The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) now allows local school systems to repurpose inclement weather days as asynchronous school days. At the discretion of the superintendent, HCPSS will use up to three inclement weather asynchronous days during the 2022-2023 school year. One of two additional codes will be instituted to reflect the decision to transition to an asynchronous instruction day:
On these Code Purple and Code Pink days, HCPSS curriculum resources for secondary students will be delivered within the Canvas learning management system. Resources will be available for all subjects and courses two hours after the start of the regular school day.
Secondary Students are expected to:
Students will receive grades for assignments in accordance with teacher parameters for the assignments. In accordance with Policy 8020: Secondary Grading and Reporting, all asynchronous day assignments must be completed within 10 days.

Students, families, staff and community members will be notified about synchronous instruction days in the same manner as all other inclement weather notifications.
Outdoor Education
I want to thank our parents and staff chaperones who went on the 6th grade Outdoor Ed trip this past week. This would not have been possible without our parent volunteers, our staff chaperones, and the 6th grade team. It was an incredible day and I am so proud of our students who spent the day building relationships with one another.
Halloween Costumes
Halloween is Monday. Parents/guardians, please be aware that students are not allowed to come to school in any type of costumes and bring toy weapons. We are encouraging students to wear PINK for Breast Cancer Awareness. Please also leave the Halloween Candy at home.
Quarter 2 Classes
Students will begin to follow their Quarter 2 schedules on Thursday, November 3rd. Students and parents/guardians can view Quarter 2 schedules now by following these steps:

Parent/Teacher Conferences- SAVE THE DATES!
Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for November 21-23, 2022 and will be held in-person on Monday, November 21st and virtually on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 22nd-23rd.
From Monday, November 7th at 8:00am, through Thursday, November 17th at 4:00pm, parents/guardians can log into HCPSS Connect to view and select available time slots to register for conferences with teachers.
More information will be sent out to families next week.

Counselor Corner
Current 8-11 grade students and their parents/guardians are invited to attend in-person information sessions on HCPSS career academies on Wednesday, Nov. 9 and Tuesday, Dec. 13 at the Applications and Research Laboratory, 10920 Clarksville Pike, Ellicott City. Each evening will include two 15-minute information sessions and a visit to a third academy.

If you are still in need of a polo shirt please contact your music teacher. If you are a returning Band, Orchestra or Chorus Family and have found that you’ve outgrown or no longer need your concert attire, we would gladly take them off your hands. All donations of polos, black pants, black skirts, and black dress shoes can be dropped off with anyone in the music department.

Our next Music Boosters meeting will be on Tuesday, November 15 at 6:30pm. The meeting will be held virtually using the Google Meet code PMS-MUSICBOOSTERS. You will need to login with your student’s HCPSS credentials. We will be discussing event dates for this year, volunteer needs, fundraising, and more. Everyone is welcome. Hope to see you there!
CARSON SCHOLARSHIP
The Carson Scholars Fund awards $1,000 college scholarships to students in grades 4-11 who excel academically and are dedicated to serving their communities. An interested student must be nominated by the principal at his/her/their school to be able to compete for a Carson Scholarship. Only one student from each school is able to apply, ensuring that each nominee epitomizes academic excellence. Carson Scholars must have a GPA of 3.75 and display humanitarian qualities through community service. Scholarships are awarded solely on the basis of academic achievement and humanitarian qualities, without regard to financial need, ethnicity, creed or religion.
If you are interested in being considered for nomination, please complete the Carson Scholarship Nomination Form and send it to Mrs. Shurtleff at erin_shurtleff@hcpss.org.
All nomination forms will be due to Mrs. Shurtleff no later than Friday, December 2, 2022.
