Recognize and name a pentagon, and compose new shapes. 

How can you tell is a pentagon?

 

  1. Introduce the shape of a pentagon. (Smartboard)
  2. Display four different color pentagons.
  3. Have the children tell how are they the same and how are the different.
  4. The teacher will trace the outline of a pentagon surface.
  5. Discuss the attributes of a pentagon.
  6. Have the children identify a pentagon by feeling its shape.
  7. Ask: What shape is this? How can you tell is a pentagon? (It has 5 sides)
  8. Have the children compare the pentagon  shape to other shapes.
  9. Ask: What would you need to build a pentagon? (Five straight lines)
  10. Have the children create their own  tactile pentagon shape using wooden stick.
  11. Have the children combine other flat shapes to create a pentagon.
