NOTE: This course is taught at a workshop in Teotitlán del Valle. With wait time and travel time it is approximately 1.25 to 1.5 hours start to finish from Oaxaca to Teotitlan traveling by public bus.

Course Description

Acquire knowledge about the natural products used for the elaboration of textiles. Learn about the elaboration of pre-Hispanic artisanship.

Program

Part I: History

• History of textiles in Oaxaca, Mexico
• History of textiles in Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca
• Visit the Museo Textil in Oaxaca
• Teotitlan del Valle: weavers (artisans)

Part II: Textiles

• Introduction to the natural materials
  Textile fibers
• Principal characteristics of the textile fibers
• Classification of textile fibers
• Textiles and weaving
• Description of dye techniques in will and with cochineal beetle dye
• Procedures for the elaboration of natural materials
• Wool
• Cochineal dye
• Natural coloring
• Natural dyes

Part III: Experimentation

• Analysis of the traditional method of dying
• Time requirements and temperatures
• Experimental processes
• Color tones

Part IV: Procedures

• Procedure for textiles (pedal loom, with needle, natural and dye with natural colors)
• Elaboration of textiles (blankets, rugs, etc.)
• Pre-Hispanic designs and colonial designs (the designs come from codices and Zapotec characters, to pictorial reproductions of works by Tamayo, Toledo and Picasso)
