Welcome to the Tracy Hall Science Center: The new home of the Department of Geosciences, along with the rest of the College of Science, was officially opened last Wednesday during a festive Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony and Open House. Tracy Hall, as the new building will be known across campus, is named for H. Tracy Hall (1919-2008), distinguished alumnus, scientist, and inventor of the process to manufacture synthetic diamonds. The Tracy and Hall families of Ogden provided the lead gift for the funding of this amazing new academic building, which encompasses 189,544 sq ft of classrooms, teaching labs, research labs, and a variety of student study spaces. Construction took 26 months, at a price tag of $77 million. Tracy Hall was designed and built with the goal of obtaining a LEED Gold certification in sustainability (LEED = Leader in Energy and Environmental Design).

We are confident that GEO majors will thrive in Tracy Hall, their new academic home. WELCOME!

Town Hall Meeting for all GEO Majors: Please join us Tuesday, September 6, from 1:30-2:30pm. Come together with other geosciences students, faculty and staff to learn about all the great things happening in our department community. Faculty will discuss undergraduate research opportunities, course offerings, and advising. Geology Club and SGE student officers will have information about club membership and activities. New majors are especially encouraged to attend. Light refreshments will be served. See the attached flyer for full information.

Richard and Belva Moyle Geoscience Majors Room: In recognition of a very generous gift to the Tracy Hall Building Fund, the geoscience Majors' Room (TY 362) is named in honor of Richard and Belva Moyle. Dr. Richard Moyle is a retired geoscience professor whose specialty was invertebrate paleontology. Belva, his wife, is a retired school teacher. The Moyles have also generously sponsored a departmental scholarship for Earth Science Teaching majors for many years. Thank you!
