Identify the equal sign and solve addition sentences with sums to 6. 

Where do we put our equal sign? 

  1. Display and say two addition sentences, one with and one without an equal sign.
  2. Have volunteers circle what is different about the second addition sentence.
  3. Ask children what they think the sign means.
  4. Then, tape four cards from Teaching Tools 9-C ( 1 seed, plus sign, 4 chickens) to show an addition expression.
  5. The teacher will say the the addition expression aloud.
  6. Have volunteers stand in front of the “1” card and four volunteers in front of the “4” card.
  7. Put the equal sign in position .
  8. Have children act out the joining action by moving into one group after the equal sign.
  9. Have answer the following questions: Where do we put an equal sign? What does the number after the equal sign show us? Can you tell the the addition sentence?
  10.  Point out that 5 is the sum.
  11. Explain that the sum tells how many in all comes after the equal sign.
  12. Repeat the activity with different children and different cards, having the class name the sum each time.
