Introduction

In response to the leaked Supreme Court opinion document that indicates the intention to overturn Roe v Wade, the US federal law protecting the right to abortion, Pyn has drafted this policy to ensure that access to fundamental reproductive health care will be available to all Pynfolk.

This policy stands in addition to the access to psychological services made available through our coaching and support program.

Background information

Abortion is a common type of reproductive health care. According to the Guttmacher Institute, 1 in 4 American women will have an abortion before they are 45. Despite the political controversy and rhetoric, 80% of Americans support abortion and at least 60% support its legality in all or most cases.

For some folks, their ability to access abortion care is already challenging because of geography and financial constraints. If Roe v Wade is overturned, access to abortion care will likely become even more dependent on the state someone resides in or available only to those who can afford to travel between states where legislation is supportive. Those facing significant financial and logistical barriers may struggle in accessing this essential health care.

The loss of federal protection of safe and legal access to abortion care and control over these rights being passed to individual US states means geographical location could determine fundamental human rights.
