A wonderful year in review…

Courtney’s Fund Gala and Silent Auction

On October 18, over 165 attendees filled the Tracy Ballroom for an evening of live music, dinner, cocktails, and great conversation.  It was a wonderful mix of friends, family, Fund supporters, and team members from our grantees: YMCA Camp Jones Gulch, the San Joaquin Outdoor educators, the Breast Cancer Fund, and the Tulane University Law School.   We had a lavish selection of silent auction items from local artists, photographers, musicians, craft makers, and donations from California’s best wineries, restaurants, museums, spas, and golf courses, and sports teams.  We raised over $10,000 from our silent auction items!   Thank you to the dozens of volunteers, sponsoring companies, and of course, the donors!  We could not have done it without you.

100% of the funds raised from the auction, as well as all donations to Courtney’s Fund are awarded as grants. The grants are used to support environmental awareness, protection, outreach, and enjoyment.  We also focus on eliminating the environmental causes of breast cancer.

Outdoor equipment, trails, and support for YMCA Jones Gulch

We provide annual support for helping children and young adults make a better connection to their natural surroundings.  With your 2014 support and donations, we awarded $5,000 to YMCA Camp Jones Gulch.  We funded multiple sets of binoculars and spotting scopes for “Gulch” students to observe shore birds and harbor seals.  To explore the small world all around us, we provided hand lenses for the students to explore the small world all around us.  Your donations also allowed us to purchase trail radios for the naturalists and camp leaders, 50 ponchos, and 12 backpacks!  We are proud to support the next generation of outdoor enthusiast and environmental advocates.

At the 2nd Courtney’s Day of Service at YMCA Camp Jones Gulch (April 13, 2014),

we had 60 volunteers building and painting six new picnic tables, installing a giant chess/checkers board, replacing an ailing foot-bridge, refreshing the picnic area and archery range, and laying the foundation for a knot-tying wall.  We got our hands really dirty by restoring the Loon Trail, Old Toyon Trail, Vista Trail, and Courtney’s own Coral’s Way. (click for full pic)

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics

The California Safe Cosmetics Act (2005) requires accurate reporting of cancer-causing chemicals and reproductive toxins used in products sold in California.  Courtney’s Fund continues to support the Breast Cancer Fund’s Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.  Our focus in 2014 was to support research and unreported enforcement of the law.  Unsure what’s in your products?  Here’s a great resource.
