‘Lucky Prize-Winners’, Lady, 15 May 1924
The result of the draw of the two lucky tickets in connection with the recent very successful Empire Ball held at Lord Leverhulme’s house at Hampstead in aid of the People’s League of Health was as follows: Ticket No. 1016, Lady Baldwin, 37, Cavendish Square; diamond bar brooch presented by Messrs. Cartier, New Bond Street. Ticket No. 102, Mrs. Hartman, 58, Brompton Square, S.W.; motor-cycle presented by Sprosen, Ltd., 111, Great Portland Street; W. In the Pageant Competition the judges, Sir Cecil Harcourt Smith, Curator of the Victoria and Albert Museum, and Mr. John Walter, proprietor of “The Times,” awarded the first prize to the costume of “New Zealand,” worn by Miss Walker. Other prize-winners included Miss Lilian Braithwàte as “Mrs. Siddons,” Mr. J. Fisher White as “Wellington,” Miss Anne Russell as “Queen Elizabeth,” Miss Strangman as “Wembley Exhibition,” Mrs. T. H. Kelly as “Lady La Tour,” Major Kanwan Shamsher Bahadur Singh de Debra Dun as “India of Old,” Miss Viola Tree as “Boadicea,” Miss Frances Carson as “Mirth,” Mr. Paul de Laszlo as “Henry VIII.,” Miss Lowe as “Australia,” and Miss Linden as “Canada.” The winner of the first prize will be painted by Mr. Philip de Laszlo, who is giving his help to the Empire Ball in this generous manner. The hon. organiser of the ball was Miss Olga Nethersole, the founder of the League of Health.
