Malaysian Youth Statement on Climate Change towards COP21

We, the youth of Malaysia, recognise a pressing need to combat climate change. We believe that the government and the current generation should be held accountable for their actions without compromising the needs of current and future generation.

We demand the Malaysian government, to take the following
actions:

1. Increase the percentage of carbon emission intensity cut to 80%, compared to the levels in 2005, by the year of 2030. In relation to the YAB Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s pledge of entering the ranks of developed and high-income nations by the year 2020 [1][2], we want the Malaysian government to take the initiative to cut down carbon emissions and achieve this in a resilient, low-carbon, resource-efficient, and socially-inclusive manner.

2. Increase the Renewable Energy portfolio in the Malaysian Energy Mix to 40%, by the year of 2030. We demand the government to end fossil fuel subsidies and to cease building new coal fired power plants. We urge the government to redirect the subsidies from fossil fuels to quicken the adoption of renewable energy by empowering, supporting and investing in more research, development and implementation on more efficient renewable energy technologies in both private and public sectors.

3. Preserve intact forests, such as but not limited to, existing primary and secondary forests,  mangroves and peat forests, as the planet’s important carbon sink [3][4][5]. We demand the government to gazette the unprotected forests, to increase the restoration of degraded forests and, to encourage and facilitate the implementation of voluntary commitments by the private sector and local communities on reducing deforestation. Besides preservation and conservation of forests, we urge the government to increase monitoring measurements to enhance transparency and traceability of sustainable commitments on effective forest management.

4.  We demand the government to promote, endorse and enhance ‘climate change education’, as per Article 6 of the UNFCCC [6], by integrating it into our Malaysia Education Blueprint [7] and other informal learning platforms for the public, to provide localised climate information and documents, as well as to increase accessibility for both urban and rural populations.

The
13th goal [8] of ‘The Global Goal for Sustainable Development’[9] is to  take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. We call upon the YAB Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to adopt the above statements  without delay, as the clock is ticking and the 21st session of Conference of Parties, or COP21, UNFCCC, is just around the corner.
