2. SCHROEDER A+ MEET FEB. 1-3, 2013:

A brief note to our swimmers about this very exciting meet that our team hosts annually.  Although this meet has time standards (which means swimmers have to perform a certain time to qualify for each event), because we host this meet, we have encouraged our kids to sign up for select events.  We did this because it’s a unique opportunity for our swimmers to compete, and it’s an exciting opportunity to see really high level swimming.  Before and after your race, you’ll be able to watch Olympians (two who have won gold medals), as well as many other great age group and Olympic Trial level swimmers.  (See other names listed above in #1 of Schroeder News, along w/more details about the meet.)

Please feel free to come to the meet and watch some fun swimming, even if your swimmer is not participating.  For instance, Olympian Anthony Ervin will be competing in the 100 Free Saturday night, as well as the 50 Free Sunday afternoon.  The January 2013 issue of Swimming World has an article about Anthony, and he is featured on the cover.

3. 2000/2012 OLYMPIAN ANTHONY ERVIN TO SPEAK TO OUR TEAM:

As mentioned above, on Monday, February 4th, 2000/2012 Olympian Anthony Ervin will be at the WSAC in Brown Deer for two sessions.  The first talk will be from 4:00 - 4:45 p.m. (aimed at 13 & up and their parents), and the second will be from 5:15 - 6:00 p.m. (aimed at 12 & Under and their parents).

You can cross over from age group to age group - no problem. There is no practice on that Monday for all groups - including Schroeder South. Each session will be dedicated to listening to the tales and experiences of this great Olympic Champion.

4. UPCOMING MEETS:

WI Regionals February 15-17 (Homestead High School)

This meet is for swimmers who do not yet have Wisconsin State qualifying times or need more qualifying times. It is the last chance for swimmers to attain qualifying times for either the 12 & Under Wisconsin State Meet or 13 & Over Wisconsin State.  All Schroeder South swimmers who do not have state qualifying times or need more should sign up for this meet and swim the maximum amount of events allowed (7).  ENTRY DEADLINE: TUESDAY, 2/5/13

Keep in mind that WI Regionals is an important team championship meet for those swimmers who do not have state qualifying times and that this will be one of the last meets of the season.  It’s a great opportunity for our kids to have fun, compete, gain experience, and evaluate their progress from when they began.

Attendance @ WI Regionals is not only important for each individual, it’s important for the team as a whole. This is why we train and put countless hours of work in the pool - to compete at championship meets such as regionals.  Once your swimmer has committed to the meet, look for your child’s name on the SST-Y South WI Regionals Scroll that we have at the pool.  Go Schroeder!

For those swimmers who do not qualify for the YMCA State Meet, this is the last meet of the short course season, and is their championship meet.

MEET SARAH WARDECKE

Sarah is our newest Schroeder coach, and she coaches our novice swimmers at Deer Creek and Greendale High School. Sarah has been swimming since she was 3, she is currently a certified WI Swimming official, and she will graduate from the University of WI - Milwaukee in May.  She has attended UWM for 5 years, swam for UWM for 4, and she knew it was the perfect fit for her when she took advantage of early decision and signed in November of her senior year.    In May she will be certified in secondary math education, but will also have a math major from the College of Letters and Science, and a minor in computer science.  Right now she is student teaching at Veritas High School, located on W. Oklahoma Avenue.

Sarah’s parents signed her up for swimming lessons when she was 3 for a variety of reasons, even though neither of them swim.  She took to the water right away and progressed to Shark and Porpoise Club by the time she was 6.  For a while she was concurrently taking swimming lessons while on the Fox Cities YMCA Swim Team, which was her team growing up in Appleton, WI.

When asked about YMCA swimming, Sarah said she’s the cliche Y girl.  “I started lifeguarding and coaching when I was 16, and I became an official when I was 18.  My dad was an official, (he started officiating because he wanted something to do at swim meets, plus he could be on the pool deck), and it was a good father/daughter activity for the two of us.”

Sarah also enjoyed her high school swimming experience, in large part due to now retired Coach Ed Zepka.  She attended Kimberly HS and competed for the combined team of Kimberly and Appleton West, where she drove 20 minutes to practice daily during her high school season.

Sarah qualified for Zones when she was 10, 11, and 12, and she traveled to North Dakota, Michigan, and Kansas.  She earned her way to Y Nationals when she was 12 for the first time, and she competed at both the University of Maryland and the Hall of Fame Pool in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

“I really loved Y swimming.  At Y Nationals, you walk in w/your team for opening ceremonies in costume, and the year my team chose Ghostbusters as our theme, I was the stay-puft marshmallow man.  Another year I was Snoopy!”

Sarah also swam at Junior Nationals and the US Open.  “I’ve become a good traveler because of swimming.”  She’s just returned from a two-week trip to Tokyo, Japan, and enjoys traveling.

Happy to have her coaching with us.....
